Christians have a very low TFR, even less than that of Hindus. How come their % increased so much in a short time?

I think you did not read Shuridh's post properly 2.6% is for Christians and 14.6% is for Muslims.

Dude, the % of Christians in India was 2.3 iirc. So 2.6% is an aberration considering the very low TFR they have

Forget about that, I learnt that TN has very low TFR of just 1.7. TN is doomed with aging and its related effects on economy

@mad indian you forget that in 2001 cencus when muslim,hindu population growth drop than chirstian population growh show incrase.
Chirstianity is the fastest growing religion in west bengal,assam,north east
with avrage growth rate of 37% between 91-2001.
Chirstianity growing in india by getting converts from other religion.
In 91 chirstian was 2.02%of india's population.
In 2001 chirstian was 2.34% of india's population.
So in 2010
chirstian was 2.62% of india's population is not surprising.

Law cannot compell people to procreate. The reverse , however is quite easy. China found it out the hard way. Once population growth level slips below replenishment scale, It become virtually impossible to jumpstart the procreation process. Unlike what people think, making babies is not quite like an assemble line in a factory. It is an extremely personal , intimate process, where emotional involvement is very important. Many nations are now grappling with this problem-China,Japan,Russian Federation, many nations of EU, to name a few.

We should fix the TFR at 2.1(after achieving a good IMR) or 2.2(in the present state of Infant Mortality Rate) to have a replenishment TFR in our country, irrespective of the Religion or State.
