Homemakers likely to get monthly salary from husbands soon

NEW DELHI: Housewives may soon start getting monthly salaries from their husbands with the government mulling a proposal which would make it mandatory for men to share a certain percentage of their income with their wives who stay back and do household chores.

The proposal is being considered by Women and Child Development (WCD) ministry for socio-economic empowerment of homemakers.

"We have got a survey conducted on this theme and are planning to hold more consultations about this plan, which at present is in consultation stage... Whenever we ask housewives what they do, most of them say they do nothing. So we feel that a mechanism can be devised to quantify and calculate the value of work that they do for their families. It will give a more socially empowered identity to these women," WCD minister Krishna Tirath told PTI.

She said the idea, mooted by some NGOs, would also be discussed in a meeting to be held with ministers of different states on September 17-18.

"The work that women do at home is also economic activity but it goes unaccounted. If children are sent to a creche, then money has to be spent. If somebody from outside does cooking or any other work, money has to be spent. And the quality of work of homemakers cannot even be compared with others," Tirath said.

The minister said if a portion of a husband's income is allocated as wife's share, it is likely to be spent on better food for children, on their education and the overall quality of standard of living of that household.

"Working in homes is economic activity and if this is recognised, it will give us a truer reflection of what the GDP of our country is. It will also help us know more accurate figure of the rate of real unemployment in the country," Tirath said.

What about TDS of the salary? A paybill register, IT register and god knows how many other forms will be involved.

With employer-empolyee relation, the wife will not get any maintenance after divorce.

This is the lamest attempt to increase GDP figures I have ever heard.

Actually this news is music to my ears. Gives me more ways to save tax.

There was also a news in which I read that some committee that looks after rights of men ( ) said they are ready to give salary but then housewives should be treated as employee and husband as employer with employer getting all the rights over employee..

Firstly, eliminate all NGOs and NGOism...they are a nuisance and money guzzling swines!

Secondly, abolish the system of marriage....and raising children should be a state subject, where the state raises the children in case both parents decide not to raise them due to professional needs!

Does the salary covers the sex? or the husband need to pay additional for sex?

Can the home makers have a part time husband, if the salary from her primary husband is not enough?

You earn 500,000 p.a., and you give 40%, i.e. 200,000 p.a. to your wife, so your net income is 300,000 p.a..

Two scenarios:

• You are taxed on 500,000 and your wife on 200,000 p.a.. This is not good, because it is double taxation.
• You are taxed on 300,000 and your wife on 200,000 p.a.. This is good, because it is not double taxation, and, both you and your wife's incomes fall under a lower tax bracket, while, if combined, would be in a higher tax bracket.

Ask any businessman esp a Gujju and he will tell you he already uses his wife's name to save tax. Perfectly legal and by the books without the wife stepping into the office.

Women run the household as it is. The money is theirs and they plan how the house is managed.
