CHANDIGARH: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday said it had the right to hoist the national flag anywhere in the country, with party MP Anurag Thakur even asking Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to join in the party's plan to unfurl the tricolour at Lal Chowk in Srinagar on January 26.
"We are living in a free nation and we have the right to hoist our national flag anywhere in the country. So what is the problem in hoisting the tricolour at Srinagar's Lal Chowk in Kashmir Valley?" said Thakur here.
"Despite all opposition, we invite Omar Abdullah to accompany us to Lal Chowk. This is a good opportunity for Abdullah to prove his loyalty towards the country," said Thakur on Saturday.
Thakur, who is the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) president and the MP from Hamirpur seat in Himachal Pradesh, is leading the Rashtriya Ekta Yatra, or campaign for national unity which started Jan 12.
The march is to culminate on January 26 with the BJP's planned national flag hoisting at Srinagar's Lal Chowk, though the Jammu and Kashmir government has said this will not be allowed.
"There are only a handful of weak people who are against this initiative. We should not let separatists dictate things to us. We have to ignore them. We are committed to pursuing our campaign peacefully and do not pose any threat to the law and order situation," he added.
This yatra is expected to cross the border town of Lakhanpur in Jammu on January 24 and then it would head towards Srinagar.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has expressed deep reservations about the BJP's flag hoisting plan, terming it a bid to inflame communal passions in the valley, and separatist leaders have also voiced their strong opposition to it.
The 15-day yatra, which was flagged off by BJP president Nitin Gadkari in Kolkata on Jan 12, is expected to cover a distance of over 3,000 km and pass through 12 states.
Thakur also accused the Jammu and Kashmir government of supporting separatists in the valley.
"The Omar Abdullah government is not doing anything to bring back the land of Pakistan occupied Kashmir. They have adopted a very lenient attitude towards separatists and are the least concerned about their own people," said Thakur.
He added, "They have given 5 lakh each compensation to the accused in stone pelting, who had injured over 2,500 policemen."
"They are providing a safe place for the activities of separatists and legally bringing terrorists to the valley. They are the biggest threat to Kashmir. If Kashmir is not safe, then it would be a threat to the whole country."
DHARAMSALA: In an act of defiance against the J&K government, the BJP has decided to go ahead with its 'Ekta Yatra' and the plan to hoist Indian national flag at Lal Chowk in Srinagar on Republic Day.
The Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday announced that it would not allow the BJP's Ekta Yatra programme. The 6000-km Ekta Yatra (National Integration rally) is being led by BJP's youth wing "Bhajumyo" national president and Lok Sabha MP Anurag Thakur.
Reacting to the J&K government's decision, Thakur said, "I have the constitutional right to unfurl the national flag in any part of my county." He added that the BJP was going ahead with its plans.
The political rally would be entering Una, Himachal Pradesh on Saturday afternoon after it started from Kolkata (West Bengal) on January 12. The BJP rally travelled through Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and would culminate on January 26 with the unfurling of the national flag at Lal Chowk in Srinagar. About 15000 BJP workers from Himachal Pradesh are participating in this rally.
Speaking to TOI, Anurag Thakur said that the Yatra began from Kolkata - the birth place of Jana Singh's founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee who died in Jammu & Kashmir during 1953 agitation. He said the Yatra had received tremendous support and helped create awareness about Artice 370. The Article 370 gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir in the union of India. The BJP believes that the resolution to Kashmir conflict lies in revocation of J&K's special status and its complete integration with India.
Coming down heavily on the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government, Thakur said, "It has lost the teeth and seems to have no vision and far-sightedness to resolve the vexed Kashmir problem. Rather than resolving the Kashmir problem, it is bowing to the diktats of the separatists."
"The separatists' elements come to New Delhi and make anti-India statements but the centre government seems to be helpless in taking any action against them, added Thakur.
This is a very bad precedent set by the Congress and the National Conference. This was the perfect time for Omar Abdullah to justify his position as the CM of the State and prove that the State Administration is capable of handling the situation in J&K. All in all, this was done in consultation with the Home Minister Mr. Chidambaram. I wonder if more States fall in line in the coming years and say no to hoisting of the Tri-Color. Not a good sign at all. I wish BJP all the best for this endeavour.
Everything which is bieng done or supported by the separatists is being supported by our honourable home minister Mr.P.Chidambaram and Sonia Gandhi. She was want's INDIA divided completely and they are also supporting communal riots between Hindus and Muslims. Time only can tell the answer to this. Very bad situation in INDIA. Congress is just a puppet of the west.
Congress wants to play shitty religion politics in this as well to appease the radical separatists and make it look like it is the fault of Muslim community so that BJP and all can throw in religion attack and then it results in the same old rubbish Godhra 2002 and 1984 attacks etc BULLSHIT cycle all over again.
Divide and Rule policy of Congress that it learnt from its real fathers: the British imperialists.
Just two questions to you guys, why they don't want BJP to raise our national flag and another one, is Indian flag will be hoisted by J&K government on republic day.
Politics is necessary for the development of a Country, but recent developments are not at all healthy. I wonder, who the real separatists are : Congress, NC or the separatists groups!
True, that opposition in India always fish in troubled waters. This time the cause is just, even if the intentions are not. If Omar thinks otherwise, he should have led from the front in maintaining the law & order of Kashmir and not run to Delhi OR give statements such as hoisting the Flag will disrupt peace in the Valley. Why can't we hoist our National Flag inside our own Country? And how does hoisting it disrupt peace in the valley? This is the time he proved his worth as a CM. This is such a shame!
