Pakistan's military said it killed 28 local and foreign militants in airstrikes Sunday in the volatile northwest, as reports emerged that civilians had died in previous strikes.

The bombing Sunday in the heavily forested Shawal Valley was part of an offensive that began last month to drive Taliban fighters and other militants from their stronghold in North Waziristan, a remote region that borders Afghanistan.

Residents say a bombing raid Friday killed nine women, six children and two male civilians.

The military had ordered the entire population of North Waziristan to leave ahead of the offensive, but some families stayed behind — because they were too poor to move, had sick family members or did not think their area would be targeted.

Residents say most militants fled ahead of the offensive.

TUNISIA
Crackdown ordered over troops' killings
Authorities in Tunisia say all mosques and media outlets calling for jihad are to be immediately closed in a bid to end a radical movement that they fear will derail the nation's transition to democracy.

A statement Sunday announced the closing of mosques operating outside the control of the Religious Affairs Ministry and places of worship that celebrated the killings last week of 15 Tunisian soldiers near the Algerian border. Two army posts were attacked by an extremist group thought to be linked to al-Qaeda's North Africa arm.

The government also announced the closing of unlicensed TV and radio stations that call for jihad and declare some people infidels.

On Saturday, police arrested about 60 suspected Islamist radicals in sweeps through numerous regions.

Tunisia is struggling to cope with the rise of Islamist militants in the wake of the 2011 revolt that ousted President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali.

Bahrain seeks to suspend opposition group: Bahrain's Justice Ministry has asked a court to suspend the activities of the country's main Shiite opposition group for three months. The move comes after top al-Wefaq figures met with a U.S. State Department official this month without a Bahraini government representative present. Bahrain ordered the U.S. official to leave the country. The lawsuit, though, makes no mention of the meeting. Instead, the state news agency reported that al-Wefaq is being taken to court for violating regulations of transparency in its general meetings.

Bosnians bury 284 war victims found in mass grave: The remains of 284 victims of the Bosnian war were laid to rest after being unearthed from what is thought to be the largest mass grave of Europe's worst conflict since World War II. Thousands of relatives gathered in prayer for the mainly Muslim victims on a soccer field in the town of Kozarac. The victims were killed in summer 1992, when Serbian troops went house to house in the area of Prijedor in northwest Bosnia and killed any non-Serbs they found, hiding their bodies in mass graves. About 100,000 people died in Bosnia's 1992-95 war.

Basque group says it is dismantling its military wing: The armed Basque separatist group ETA has dismantled its military wing and set up a group to finalize the deactivation of any remaining weapons and explosives, according to an ETA statement in a Basque newspaper. The announcement is the latest step toward full disarmament for ETA, which called a unilateral cease-fire in Spain in 2011. More than 800 people have died in almost four decades of attacks by the group.

Germany honors officers who tried to kill Hitler: Germany honored a group of Nazi-era officers who tried to kill Adolf Hitler 70 years ago. The plot helped establish a principle under which German troops today are encouraged to defy orders if they would result in a crime or violate human dignity. President Joachim Gauck called the July 20, 1944, bombing of Hitler's Wolf's Lair headquarters in eastern Prussia a "significant day in German history" for showing the world that there were Germans who opposed the Nazi regime. Hitler survived the bombing.

BANNU: When Pakistan Air Force jets rained down missiles on a village in North Waziristan last week, it was described as yet another victory over Taliban insurgents in an ongoing military offensive.
Now a new account has emerged of the killing of dozens of women and children in the air strikes, sparking anger over rising civilian casualties and fears that a new generation of radicals is being created.

Was there any doubt that the jihadi pak-fauj's tall claims of having killed no civilians in their strikes was just that, a dollop of Bajaur Bullsh*t served with a side of miramshah make-believe?

The question in my mind however, is, when is this going to come back and bite them in their pa'astaan? I just hope I have my popcorn and beer ready by then.

Your army has no authority to declare any remaining civilians as enemy or terrorists.

I see no difference. You are terming those people who have not moved out as enemy of the state and their death are not listed as civilian deaths, which the article correctly points out.

And which you call western propaganda.

You also say you needn't need permission from anybody.

I see your action more heinous, at least Israel accepts that there are civilian causalities, where as you don't.

We simply don't know how many civilians turned into terrorists in their after life after bombs landed into their compound in Pakistan.

Just nitpicking, about your statement you made. The world is silent because you are going against the bad guys. And thus collateral is being accepted. But you can't silence everyone. These voices will gain shriller tone with time due to different objectives.

So, civilian causalities are bound to happen, and it's happening. Couple of article can't have much effect, unless your govt. is spineless.

When USA launches targeted drone strikes on Pakistan then according to pakis mostly civilians die.
But when Pakis launch combined aerial bombing, artillery shelling and army attack then magically there are no civilian casualties.

We have started bombing after equation of the civilian, so there will be a minimum chance left of civilians casualties
