Operation Zarb-e-Azb: Terrorists are on the run, says Bajwa
By Web DeskPublished: July 10, 2014

MIRAMSHAH:-Almost a month after Operation Zarb-e-Azb was formally started in mid June, the army allowed local and international media to visit Miramshah in North Waziristan, main centre for militants.

The on going operation has forced locals and militants to flee, leaving the town, and one of the major bases for the militants, deserted.

Media personnel were shown around the militant facilities. An al Qaeda-inspired flag along with weapons, explosives and other material recovered by the military were displayed.

During a media briefing by the ISPR director Major General Asim Bajwa and Operation Commander Major General Zafar Khan said that as many as 400 terrorists have been killed while 130 have been injured in the operation so far. Over 2,000 IEDs were found from the 11 IED factories discovered by the military.

Maj-Gen Bajwa said they had also discovered the under ground tunnels that the militants had constructed in the area. At least one of the tunnels made by the militants was a kilometer long.

"This [Miramshah] was one of their major base, we have dislodged them from here and now they on the run," said Bajwa.

"We have also discovered their command and control centre, which would definitely affect their capabilities,"

The spokesperson said the area was one of the stronghold of the militant and as military entered the area it was discovered that they have stored explosives and IEDs

Giving details about the operation, the Operation Commander said that armed forces have gained control of the 80 per cent of the area.

Nobody is present in Miramshah anymore. They are gone, your army is clearing already vacated places. Once the thrust ends, they will be back. Create new stronghold at another place.

The mess you created is like a chronic disease which will have bouts of re-return even if medicines are administered.

Indian media should show these atrocities. Launch a media campaign like how friends from across the border do when it comes to Kashmir!

@Neo, PA needs to get the lakhs displaced back as soon as possible and rehabilitate them, otherwise you are back to square one.

Big headache is the hundreds of militants who have merged with the civilians and escaped. Was reading that the Barbers were very busy in the days leading to the offensive.

Military will keep some presence over there, we are
aware of the fact that some are disguised and have cut their hair and beards to look more human and civilised people.
The foreign mercenaries have fled, some got killed and others are fleeing for Syria and Iraq. Anyone speaking other languages than Pashto or Urdu is under watch. Remember that Tajiks and Uzbeks don't speak Pashto or Darri, they are paid mercenariea hired by TTP.
But TTP is broken in half and since Karachi Airport attack they haven't been able to undertake any action.

Looks like you are waiting for it, right?

Ramadan is a month when mosques.and bazars are packed and people shop for eid every day. And the month is almost halfway. Have you seen any major attack since the operation was launched?

Yes there will be some attacks, NWA was their stronghold but there are plenty hiding elsewhere. So don't worry, you will still have something to enjoy. It's not over yet.

No idea. Originally the operation was to be launched in February when the mountains were covered in thick snow and the trrrorist would have had no chance to escape to Kunar or other neighboring agencies. Many of them were killed during the air raides. But then NS and IK fcuked up big time and started a dialogue with TTP giving her enough time to regroup and regain strenght. Precious time and leverage was lost with the melting ice in the mountains.
Then Karachi happened and there was no going back, the operation was.launched.

This will definitely be a prolonged operation. The most immediate strategy for the TTP will be to disband their fighters and regroup because they know that the Pakistani establishment has a poor track record when it comes to achieving long term stabilization and reconstruction.

One this is for sure, the victory or defeat in this conflict will depend upon public perception. There was a major rift between the Taliban prior to this engagement over the number of civilian casualties. Even the Taliban realized that religious fervor could only get them so far. Hopefully the Pakistani government will cash in on the opportunity and win over the people. That is the only way to ensure victory.

That's been the case in all the wars they fought to date.
Not at all. Up until now either side fought without giving a single thought to the inhabitants of the battlefield. The civilian casualties and refugees were essentially a non sequitur to the two fighting sides. I think this time it's different. How this matter is handled remains to be seen.

Oh, I misunderstood the context.

I assumed you were talking about what the public opinion will be after the war.

Public perception in this war is in Army's favor. They are the good guys, the more since Zardari and Nawaz have brought nothing good and once again same people who opposed once the military during good days of Musharraf are counting on the army to save the country.

Sharia law or talibanisation is not as pupoluar or desireable by the masses as often exaggerated by the media. Pakistani youth is pretty liberal, women enjoy a great deal of freedom compared to other muslim states and will not compromise it.

TTP is extremely unpopular in Pakistan, a country of 193million, mostly a moderate society. Why else would TTP spend money on hiring 5000 foreign mercenaries

It was stupid of them to attack the biggest airport in the country and not expect a military backlash in return.
