Pakistan woman stoned to death by family for marrying man she loved

A 25-year-old woman was stoned to death by her family outside one of Pakistan's top courts on Tuesday in a so-called "honor" killing for marrying the man she loved, police said.

Farzana Iqbal was waiting for the High Court in the eastern city of Lahore to open when a group of around dozen men began attacking her with bricks, said Umer Cheema, a senior police officer.

Her father, two brothers and former fiance were among the attackers, he said. Iqbal suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead in hospital, police said.All the suspects except her father escaped. He admitted killing his daughter, Cheema said, and explained it was a matter of honor. Many Pakistani families think a woman marrying her own choice of man brings dishonor on the family.

Iqbal had been engaged to her cousin but married another man, Cheema said. Her family registered a kidnapping case against him but Iqbal had come to court to argue that she had married of her own free will, he said.

Around 1,000 Pakistani women are killed every year by their families in honour killings, according to Pakistani rights group the Aurat Foundation.

The true figure is probably many times higher since the Aurat Foundation only compiles figures from newspaper reports. The government does not compile national statistics.Campaigners say few cases come to court, and those that do can take years to be heard. No one tracks how many cases are successfully prosecuted.

Even those that do result in a conviction may end with the killers walking free. Pakistani law allows a victim's family to forgive their killer.
But in honour killings, most of the time the women's killers are her family, said Wasim Wagha of the Aurat Foundation. The law allows them to nominate someone to do the murder, then forgive him.

"This is a huge flaw in the law," he said. "We are really struggling on this issue."

Honour killings: India's crying shame

Controversial conviction of dentist couple for double murder this week shines spotlight on scourge going unchecked.

Last updated: 28 Nov 2013

According to statistics from the United Nations, one in five cases of honour killing internationally every year comes from India. Of the 5000 cases reported internationally, 1000 are from India
. Non-governmental organisations put the number at four times this figure. They claim it is around 20,000 cases globally every year.

While traditionally occuring in villages and smaller towns in India, the cases of 'honour killing' have been on the rise and are reported sporadically in the media. The double murder of a 14-year-old school girl and a 50-year-old domestic help in a New Delhi suburb with its 'honour killing' sub text has received unprecedented attention, and is perhaps urban India's most hyped alleged 'honour killing'.

Morale of the story: People living in glass houses shouldn't be throwing with stones.

LoL, what an Idiot.

1000 cases in India and 1000 cases in Pakistan are the same?

One has a population of 1.2 Billion other merely 190 million.

But, I can't pronounce you guilty, can I ? Statistics isn't taught in Madrassa, or is it?

Give the full report of the 5000 honour killings by UN, and the trends.

These figures are considered estimates and are widely believed to be severe underestimates. Due to lack of focused reporting and recording of Honour Killings internationally very little is known about the true extent of HBV worldwide.
5000 honour killings internationally per year.
1000 honour killings occur in India
1000 honour killings occur in Pakistan
12 honour killings per year in UK
Statistics & Data

Data is from the same UN report that you provided.

And Pakistan with only 190 million population and same number of honor killings, presents a grim pictures of 7 times more prevalence of honor killings.

Non-governmental organisations put the number at four times this figure. They claim it is around 20,000 cases globally every year.
The above is from the article you quoted, needless to say which country has vast areas of no go areas. So, we can assume what would be the number of unreported cases in Pakistan.

And the next is about conviction, do I have to say it separately the dismal figure of conviction in Pakistan.

======================

Moral of the story,

Pakistani like to live in glass house but want their woman to observe purdah 24/7 in the house. And will not shy from stoning her to death if there is slight slip.

I kinda sorta agree with @Neo here, we have nothing to be proud of here.

===

But there is always a silver lining, most of the Indian states associated with honour killings actually notch up the highest number of inter-caste marriages. And surprisingly Southies are quite casteist.
