ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Navy is in the process of acquiring Oliver Hazard Perry Class Ships from USA, a press release said on Tuesday.
First of these ships (USS McINERNEY (FFG-8) will be handed over to Pakistan Navy on 31 August 2010 at Naval Station Mayport USA.
The ship will be named PNS ALAMGIR (F-260). This will be third ship in Pakistan Navy to bear this name. Ambassador of Pakistan to USA H.E Husain Haqqani will be chief guest on the occasion, says a press release received here today from Washington DC.
Oliver Hazard Perry Class Frigates are being operated by many navies in the world to undertake a number of maritime operations at sea.
These ships are most suited for conducting Maritime Security Operations, which have become the prime concern of the nations. PNS ALAMGIR will augment Maritime Security Operations in the Arabian and the adjoining seas.
It will also provide strength to the Pakistan Navy Surface Fleet.
Crew of the ship has already arrived in USA and is being trained at Naval Station Mayport. Captain Naveed Ashraf T.Bt TI(M) will be the first Commanding Officer of PNS ALAMGIR (F-260).
"Poorer countries such as Pakistan can be granted U.S. ships no longer in commission. Any needed repairs or alterations are paid for with foreign military aid provided by the U.S. But there is a catch: Recipients of the aid money must “buy American.”
See americans doesnt give anything for charity. First this is agift ship. Second 30+ years after servicing for the nation the whole hull would have gone for a trip. Maintenance will be a nightmare for sure, which inturn trickle money back to US kitty. Good luck for them with that ship
Russian literally lost the blue print of the Gorshkov and now they have literally made a new ship over it. I beg you to see the difference between 2. If not then you need to read more on defence news. Good Luck
I think you have forgotten Dollar Bhik to pakistan for mercenary activities by Americans, the same Bhik is being used to refurbish all the old ships at a cost of USD 65Million/ship. Its absolutely clear from what Rear Adm. Steve Voetsch has said in the article.
She only good enough for defensive roles and escort missions,
She is a close match ( NOT EQUIVALENT ) to IN`s Frigate Brahmaputra (Type 16A) Class..
Brahmaputra (Type 16A) Class
Displacement: 3,850 tons
Speed: 30+ knots
Armament: 1. Kh-35 uran Anti-ship Missiles..
2. 24 x Barak SAM (3 x 8 cell VLS units)
3. 1 x OTO Melara 76 mm gun
4. 4 x AK-630 6-barreled 30 mm gatling gun CIWS
Comparing the PN vessel with the Older IN vessel i can say Brahmaputra can tear her opponent in open waters same can be done by IN corvettes like KORA class..
