61st Cavalry's Mounted Review at Jaipur

On the occasion of Rajasthan Day, the 61st Cavalry Regiment of Indian Army displayed a dashing Risala of 130 fine bred horses during Mounted Review Parade here at Rambagh Polo Ground, Jaipur.

This epoch event's parade was reviewed by Lt Gen Gyan Bhushan, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM, GOC-in-C, South Western Command; after the dazzling warriors of the Cavalry gathered on horse backs varying their lance stances at the hint of a command.
Adding to the glamour was the '17th Rajputana Rifles' Band that played its tunes with authenticity and style.
People of the Pink City welcomed the Gallop of 130 Cavalry units with dropping jaws and continuous applause. It was an awesome treat.

A bit of history :-
The same land of Rajputana has produced the two finest native cavalry breeds of India, namely - the 'Marwari' and 'Kathiawadi'.
These strong and apt cavalry breeds went a long way in ensuring that the Rajputs were able to resist the Turkish invasions and the challenges thereafter throughout the medieval centuries.
In later addition, light cavalry was fielded successfully by the Marathas and Sikhs.
In the midst of modern warfare of WWII, the troops of Indian cavalry (like 'Jodhpur Lancers') earned fame deep into MENA and Europe in various campaigns.

The 61st Cavalry of the IA today balances the march of Indian martial tradition into the world of 21st century's technology warfare with unique elan.

The 61st Cavalry Regiment of the Indian Army is one of the three last remaining horsed cavalry army regiments anywhere in the world.

When the British departed the shores of India in 1949, the only horses left in the military stables were with the units of some of the Imperial Service (state Forces) troops in the armies of the Indian Princely States. Finally, on integration of the state forces into the Indian Army in 1951 the states' horsed cavalry units were reorganized and reconstituted into the Gwalior Lancers, Jodhpur/Kachhawa horse, Mysore Lancers, and B Squadron, 2nd Patiala Lancers. During May 1953, Army headquarters further decided to disband all these separate horsed cavalry units and to raise a single unit instead, and so on 1 October 1953, the New Horsed Cavalry Regiment was raised at Gwalior, with Lt. Col. Phulel Singh of the Jammu and Kashmir State Forces as the first Commandant on 19 November 1953. The Regiment was re-designated 61 Cavalry in January 1954.

Today, it is one of the few remaining unmechanised mounted cavalry regiments in the world, alongside the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and the 11th Cavalry Regiment of the Moscow Military District.[1]

The Kremlin Regiment (also called The Presidential Regiment, Russian: Кремлëвский полк [Kremlyovskiy polk], Президентский полк [Prezidentskiy polk]) is a unique military regiment, it is a part of the Russian Federal Protective Service with the status of a special unit. The regiment ensures the security of the Kremlin and its treasures and guards the highest state officials. And in accordance with the federal law of December 8, 1997 "On Immortalizing the Soviet People's Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945", the regiment also maintains a guard of honor at the eternal flame of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The regiment is housed in the historic Kremlin Arsenal.

My grandfather was a Uhlan. His horse fell on him one day.

The Polish cavalry regiment charged a German Infantry division and not tanks. Later on, APCs arrived and scattered the Polish. The initial charge was successful and bought time for the Polish forces to withdraw.

As for the Polish Uhlans (ulnai), here is one account:

The problem with all these reports is that no mounted Polish cavalrymen ever charged at German tanks with lances in World War II.
