US Army Air Defense Artillery joke:

Q: How do identify a friendly versus enemy helicopter?

A: Shoot it down and count the rotors.

Crossing razor wire barefoot and barelegged at night... they really need ladders. Do the have ladders?
==============
Well, you know, VN is not a rich country, so we can not equip army with best equipments. We have to fight in "Poor family way": simple, effective and casualty reducing... So the Daccong doesn't need a kevlar vest, or shoes... They are often naked, or wear short pants, short hand shirts, so they can have best feeling. Daccong are trained to find a safe place to jump over a razor wire, crawl through barelegged, in midnight, without seeing, just feeling... They don't need a ladders (Daccong always equip with just a AK with 90 rounds, some grenadies, a knife, nothing else, they equip as light as good )... Sometimes, when they need a ladder, a soldier will find a safe place, lie down on razor wire barefoot and barelegged, become a "ladder"... I'll find a picture for you!

Ever heard about a term called "Guerilla warfare" ?? Every American should know what all can be achieved through such highly lethal irregular warfare. You got your asses kicked by the Vietcong which utilized guerrilla tactics extensively and effectively to maximize your losses.

The VC and NVA were allowed sanctuaries in Laos and Cambodia, which provided for restrengthening of debilitated units. The US Congress cut off funding for the forces of the VN government in place after US troops were withdrawn. It was politics to a great extent, a story somewhat less dramatic than "VC kicked your asses."

For American, It is hard to accept "VC kicked US asses"... Just: "We withdraw in honor". But, withdraw in a battle = honor? To me, there's no honor in a battle when we retreat...
The question is :"Why did US have to withdraw?"
I watch a lot of US documentary films (on National Graphic Channel and Discovery - ah, many people say that there's no freedom in informations, news in VN, but I can watch US channel freely, on cable TV, which founded by State TV, LOL)... In these films, the reason was just American anti-war protests!
But no one asked why did American make anti-war protest? Because they all loved peace?
So in 2003, some huge protest anti-war against Iraq happened, with million people... Why do US soldiers still stay in Iraq?
Actualy, this is the answer:
From 1965-1972: US lost approximately 58.000 soldiers, 305.000 wounded, more than 10.000 aircrafts lost... That means one year US lost 8.300 soldiers, 43.000 wounded, 1.400 aircrafts lost.
I bet, if Iraqi insurgents or Taliban kill just 1.500 US soldiers per year, US will withdraw immediately. But they could not do that.
Our Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh wrote a letter to South Vietnam Nation Liberation Front while she was in Paris, attending Paris Agreement 1972:" Our victory in negotiation based on your victory in battlefield. The more casualties enemy has, the more favorable terms we have"...

That may be the case, but who the hell stopped US from attacking Laos and Cambodia, after all Yanks were fighting the big bad Communism monster, isn't it ? The fact is American troops were never exposed to guerrilla warfare in the first place, since they had high confidence in their high tech weaponry and modern warfare techniques, but they learned it in a very hard way by getting chopped like onions while battling the VC.

And if politics was the reason, well, such assholes should have been shot for massacring the lives of 58000 men, by the American public, who pride themselves in being the champions of peace, free and equality for the world.

Common man, you really expect everyone is as stupid as the Pakis and Talibs who test electric fences by touching them with their bare hands ? :)

Guerilla warfare has a lot of aspects, most of which are unknown to us. And the best thing about it is, it is adaptable to the local environment which can keep changing every now and then. Hence you are trained for all aspects. Obviously, those troopers jumping barefoot over razor wires has some meaning to the region they are probably gonna be fighting some aspect which we don't know. So there's no point of calling it stupid in the first place. VAis an highly experienced and battle hardened army, the only country to fought with one superpower and the another would be superpower.

1. The US military bombed in Laos and Cambodia and had covert ops there, but could not invade those countries, probably because the logistics were not feasible. Fear of international and domestic opinion probably were other reasons.

2. An Australian jungle warfare expert, forget his name, was quoted as saying the Brits and Aussies learned to fight in the jungle, the Americans just tried to destroy it. I think that is true.

3. We can't shoot the people we send to Congress, much as we would like.
