In the aptly named Graveyard of the Atlantic off the North Carolina coast, researchers have found the wrecks of a Nazi U-boat and the ship it sank during a World War II convoy.

Joe Hoyt of NOAA was the chief scientist for the expedition that discovered the U-boat 576 and the merchant ship Bluefields in about 700 feet of water off Cape Hatteras.

He says the scene is unusual because the whole battlefield is on the ocean floor.

The ship and the U-boat sank April 15, 1942, when the U-boat attacked a convoy traveling under the protection of U.S. troops.

The 45 men on the U-boat are believed to be entombed in the wreck. No one on the Bluefields was killed. That ship was traveling under a Nicaraguan flag.

Researchers discovered the shipwrecks in August. .
