Kuwait wants to buy Sidewinder missiles

WASHINGTON, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Kuwait has expressed its interest in purchasing 80 AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder Block II All-Up-Round missiles.

The missiles, along with their associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support would be worth an estimated $105 million, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Tuesday.

The DSCA notified Congress of the possible sale, stating that if the sale is approved and goes forward, it would contribute to U.S. foreign policy and national security by helping to improve the security of a friendly country, which is an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.

The announcement said the proposed Sidewinder AIM-9X-2 missile system sale wouldn't alter the basic regional military balance.

The DSCA in its statement to Congress observed that the Kuwait air force is modernizing its fighter aircraft to better support its own air defense needs. The Sidewinder AIM-9X-2 missiles, manufactured by Raytheon, would enhance Kuwait's interoperability with the U.S. and other Central Command nations, making it a more valuable U.S. military partner in an increasingly important area of the world.
