CHANDIGARH: He was children’s favourite member of the Hindu pantheon even before they made the hit animated movie about him. US president Barack
Obama also reportedly kept his idol in his pocket as a lucky charm. Lord Hanuman has been known for his loveable and faithful nature and has always remained popular. Hanuman Jayanti falls on Thursday.
It is not necessary that Hanuman Jayanti should fall on Tuesday, which is considered his day in Hinduism, said city-based astrologer Madan Gupta Spatu.
He said, In astrology, the planet Mars, which is red in colour, is called bhoomi putra (son of earth). It has been associated with Tuesday and Hanuman. So all who are suffering from the malefic influence of Mars, are advised to donate red-coloured items or worship Hanuman.
Head priest of Hanuman temple in Sector 20, Kishori Lal said, Preparations are on for Thursday’s celebrations. Lord Hanuman will be decked up in the morning. Then, at 3.30 pm, there will be Sunderkand path, which shall continue till 8 pm. After that, there will be aarti and laddoo bhog. The 10-foot idol of Lord hanuman will be decorated with flowers on the occasion.
Utsav Sindhu and Vrat Ratnakar Shastra state that Hanuman Jayanti falls on the poornima (full-moon night) of Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar. There are other shastras that consider his birthday as falling on the Chaturdashi of Krishna paksha (14th day of fortnight of the darkening moon). Besides fasting on this day, sindoor is applied on the idol of Hanuman to appease him. The story behind it is that when Hanuman reached Ashok Vatika, where Sita was being held captive, he saw her applying sindoor. When Hanuman asked her about the significance of the saffron-coloured powder, Sita replied that it enhanced the longevity of her husband and applying it pleased Lord Ram. Then, Hanuman applied sindoor on his entire body to please Ram.
