Well, only problem is China is not that powerful to challenge anyone in IO. Hell, China cannot challenge US navy in east asia today, how big threat China can impose on IO? How many ships and planes does China deploy in IO? Almost ZERO!

Chinese forces cannot even match Pakistan's navy in IO. China is still counting on US to protect its sea line in IO.
I wish all Chinese are as intelligent like you...

Its just buyer seller relationship in defence , in other sector we can have co-operation more than that

Being a US military ally means being a puppet in that hands of Puppeteer , good example is our neighbours in west

We Indian know US better than most... India is too independent for anyone's liking...
Basing on the posts from our indian friends in this thread, it seems to me that most of them believe they are allies in IO.

and what is definition of ally?

having trade/business and getting ammunition/nuclear energy, loans ?

I think all nations work on give and take basis. USA has no friend or foe for forever. If you are good for their national interests and they need you then you are their ally
Like the British use to say about Pakistan, you cant buy them but you can rent them cheap. Pakistan as ally ended when USA found they were hideing Osama bin Laden.

At least it is moving in that direction with the convergence of security concerns of the two countries... I would blame China for its belligerence towards its smaller surrounding countries... Issuing warning on daily basis is futile and pushing countries towards USA...

Can anyone though of USA & Vietnam coming closure, now there is a possibility in near future USA using Vietnamese ports...

China has to blame herself for her predicament and if it stays the course than it will face isolation down the road. India will keep on practicing an independent policy but at the same time cooperate with nation or nations to protect her interest. On the other hand Chinese regime will continue feel insecure internally and externally fear foreign powers because of her experience in early 1900's.

If Chinese leadership is dreaming of creating an Empire where sun never sets than they need to revisit their boardroom once again and smell the coffee aroma of the new century that is called "Age of Internet".

On the question of the topic the short and simple answer is India will be ally in the areas of geopolitics which enhance and protect her long term interests around the world but more importantly to be able able to maintain internal peace due to the fact that India is made of multiple religions which foreign powers will try to exploit to their advantage. At the end of the day it is up to USA to decide whether they want India to be ally or rival.

US has now an ally in India: Lawmaker

Published March 20, 2013 | By admin
SOURCE: PTI

Holding that Pakistan is the source of many of the US problems in Afghanista, an American lawmaker has said that America has now an ally in India and an enemy in Islamabad.

"Things have changed in the last 20 years. Pakistan is no longer our ally and India is no longer an ally of the Soviet Union. What we have now an ally in India and an enemy in Pakistan," Congressman Dana Rohrabacher said.

"It is not because we are declaring them that they are our enemy, but because Pakistan declared itself as an enemy of the United States," Rohrabacher alleged.

"No body, but an enemy would take the murderer, a terrorist who slaughter 3,000 people and give him safe haven and then arrest the man who helped us bring justice to that murderer."

He was referring to detained Pakistani Doctor Shakil Afridi, who had helped the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) hunt down former Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden on May 2, 2011.

"It is about time that we realise that Pakistan is the source of the many of the problems that we have there (Afghanistan) rather than being optimistic that Pakistan is going to change," Rohrabacher said.

In response to a question from Rohrabacher, Washington-based think-tank Daniel Markey told lawmakers at a Congressional hearing that Pakistan can be even "worse enemy" of America than it currently is, particularly in Afghanistan.

"Let's be careful, what we wish for because they can be even worse enemy than they currently are," Markey, Senior Fellow for India, Pakistan and South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations said.

"I think you are right in a sense. Pakistan has been incredibly frustrating and at times would be better characterised as an adversary or an enemy particularly with respect to our differences on Afghanistan," Markey said in response to question from Rohrabacher.

Seth G Jones from Rand told lawmakers in his remarks that individuals from the ISI and Pakistan military continue to provide some support to Afghan insurgents.

"Indeed, Pakistan is running one of the most successful covert action programmes today against a major power — and against the United States no less," he said.

"The US failure to curb Pakistan's sanctuary and support is particularly egregious since the United States was involved in an almost identical programmes 30 years ago — with the ISI — against the Soviets in Afghanistan," Seth said.

There are many posters here saying that "India is too independent" for US or any other nation to have us as ally.

But if wikileaks are to be believed then our politicians were showing to some US embassy staffer that piles of money have been arranged to bribe their own colleagues from other parties so that they can vote in favour of government.

So maybe we are not that "independent" afterall. :tsk::sad::sad:

Whether Married or Singles, both cry

US is that big shiit for India that India can't either ignore it nor even accept to be a Western ally too :toilet:. being a friend with US means for being a friend of a society of the world, which does have a social structure and enough influence on the world due to its strong links with Europe too, the majority of US who have European identity..... and hence it again comes with a serious shiits associated with the Identity Difference, cultural clashes etc. and hence a threat to come on the condition to get recognized as either an enemy of that society, similar to Muslims, or become part of their all the rights and wrongs they ever did in past, or, they want to continue doing in future too due to their religious/racial feeling etc., which is mainly intended to maintain inflow of money from developing countries in either way:facepalm:

I think India would try to become a good friend of US+West only. similar to a friend in need, a friend indeed, with a condition to leave the table whenever it face any problem due to its friendship with US/West.
friendship doesn't mean that India would start participating with US in their wars, neither India would become part of their efforts to fix their conflicts with Middle East/Muslims etc. and also there must not be any reason, why India would become an arm or Christianity against Islam, nor there be any condition imposed on India that it has to get involved with the failures of Western society too, to help them maintain prosperity in either way :toilet:. there would always be an opportunity to leave the table, whenever its required, with a promise to help US/West too in tough circumstances , as a responsible society of world....:india:

but things aren't as easy as I said as above. US/West simply believes in power excessive to get their work done/get prosperity in either way, and hence there can't be any proper talks between these two societies of the world until Indian Society comes in the position to defend itself from US first  :thumb:
I got no reply on this comment? anyone has any idea opposed to mine??????? :ranger:
