Suicide bomber wounds 22 in central Istanbul: police

ISTANBUL: A suicide bomb ripped through crowds of shoppers and cafe-goers in the heart of Istanbul on Sunday, wounding 22 people, as an extended unilateral ceasefire by the separatist PKK came to an end.

The blast targeted riot-police patrolling the busy Taksim Square in the centre of the Turkish economic capital, police chief Huseyin Capkin said.

"We think it was a suicide attack," he said, adding that 12 of the injured were civilians and 10 were police.

Capkin said none of the injured were in danger and the only fatality was the bomber, who blew himself up before reaching his intended target.

"He tried to get into a police bus but didn't succeed," he said.

Turkish television showed footage of police taking away the lifeless body of a man from the scene, as well as dazed and injured people receiving first aid.

Capkin did not say who was suspected of responsibility, but the separatist rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and extreme left-wing groups have carried out bomb attacks in the past in Istanbul, home to more than 12 million inhabitants.

Analysts quoted by television stations pointed to likely PKK involvement, whose unilateral ceasefire declared on August 13 was due to end on Sunday.

The PKK said on September 30 that it had decided to extend its truce by one month, an announcement taken to mean it would end on October 30.

Istanbul governor Avni Mutlu said the bombing was the work of a "terrorist organisation" without elaborating. He told reporters that an investigation was underway to identify the culprits.

Murat Karayilan, a top commander of the outlawed PKK, last week said the PKK would no longer target civilians and wanted to extend a unilateral truce indefinitely if the government demonstrates a commitment to dialogue.

"We are actually in favour of a permanent ceasefire"¦ We are waiting. We have not decided yet," he told the Radikal newspaper.

Taksim Square, and the streets leading to it, attract tens of thousands of people a day and are patrolled by anti-riot police around the clock.

According to witnesses quoted by news channels, the powerful blast shook the area around 10.30 am (0830 GMT), blowing out windows in nearby offices and hotels.

Footage showed police and ambulances rushing to the scene.

Police immediately threw a security cordon around the area, and streets including the pedestrianised historic Istiklal were closed off, the CNN-Turk and NTV channels reported.

On June 22 a bomb exploded in a suburb of Istanbul as a bus full of soldiers was going past, killing five soldiers and the teenage daughter of one of them.

Responsibility was claimed by the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK), an obscure radical group loyal to jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, jailed for life in 1999.

The Turkish authorities say TAK is a front used by the PKK, especially when attacks claim civilian casualties.

The PKK has said TAK is a splinter group outside its control.

The PKK has waged a bloody 26-year campaign for self-rule in mainly Kurdish southeast Turkey. — AFP

32 injured in apparent suicide bombing in Turkey

Istanbul, Turkey (CNN) -- At least 32 people were wounded, five seriously, in an apparent suicide bombing in the center of Istanbul on Sunday, police said.
Those injured in the attack in Taksim Square included 15 police officers and 17 civilians, said Istanbul Governor Huseyin Azni Mutlu. The five people in serious condition were all police officers, he said.
The male bomber died at the scene, Mutlu todl reporters. A second device was found on the bomber's body that either failed to detonate or was not used, he said.
The bomber was trying to get into a police car when he set off the explosion. Security cameras caught the event, and officials were looking over the video for more information, Mutlu said.
He condemned the attack as a "crime against humanity." He would not name the bomber or discuss a motive, and said it was too early to provide information on possible ties to organizations while the investigation was under way.
Earlier, Istanbul Police Chief Huseyin Capkin said the suspected bomber tried to board a police bus parked in the square, but the blast occurred before he did.
Taksim Square houses a commercial district and a major transportation network that includes buses, metro systems and taxis. Visitors throng the area, which is typically patrolled by numerous officers.
The suicide bomber struck when the city was marking National Day, which celebrates the declaration of independence for the Turkish republic. The parade was originally scheduled for Friday, but bad weather forced a postponement.
Analysts familiar with the Kurdistan Workers' Party, known as the PKK, told CNN Turk that it is likely PKK was behind the
attack.
But a party spokesman told CNN that he did not know anything about the explosion.
"This blast in Taksim or explosion, I have no idea about it," PKK spokesman Roj Qandil said.
Qandil said the PKK's "unilateral cease-fire" was scheduled to end Sunday, but he said party leader Murat Karayilan told a Turkish journalist several days ago that "we are not going to do any actions against civilians anymore."

^^^^ If not for its army Turkey would have long been another Failed State such as pakistan begging $$dollars$$ for survival and killing their own in return for handsome fee. However, things do change and Turkey is over-overwhelmingly Muslim, so secularism has to eventually fail and give rise to Extremist Islam, pushing Turkey back to old Ottman era in this 21st century, due to which Turkey would have to say goodbye to EU membership.
However, these bombings could be done by Kurds, but they have been at peace, moreover, they are weak and would not commit such a mistake.

We grieve with our Turkish friends. May the souls of the lost rest in peace.

Beware that wicked snake you nurture in the east. They will bite you one day, just as they have done us for the last 64 years.

samajhdaar ko ishara hi kaafi hai Thakur ji.

Where's the trend been heading these days? Pakistanies arrested in Morocco, in Yemen, in Indonesia, in Saudi Arabia, in Latin America, in Europe and the United States.

yadi tum samajhdaar ho aur tumhaare liye ishaara hi kaafi hai, to tumhe yeh bhi samajh lena chahiye, ki har aatankwaadi apne aarambh wo bh*@$ike l@#$e ma&a#$od% desh ko anugaman karta hai.

Besides, DNA reconstruction and forensics can tell a lot about a person, especially if he entered the country legally and had his information put in a database.

Sadly with our Turkish friends. Lost souls can rest in peace. Beware the evil snake you love the East. They bite a day, just as they did for us over the past 64 years.

Communist B@st@rd$ have not even spared Turkey. Communism is a disease and must be exterminated from every part possible; especially in India and Turkey---by any means necessary. Including of those bleeding hearts who cry for them saying that "they're also our people". Our people don't blow their people up and render thousands of women as widows and kids as orphans. Communism (Maoists in India and PKK in Turkey) is a disease that has to be crushed with brute force; because if Communists get a chance to win against us, the will spare no effort in exterminating all those who don't believe like them.

This has been seen in South America, Cuba, North Korea, Soviet Russia, Khmer Rouge in Cambodia and numerous other countries suffering from Communist madness.
