Police Raid in Popular Front's Jihadi Training Camp; Terrorists under arrest, arms and bombs seized

The Kerala Police on Wednesday confirmed that the training camp held at a secret facility they had raided at Narath, Kannur on Tuesday and the 21 activists of the Popular Front of India they had arrested from there had terror connections, strengthening the apprehensions that the Malabar region had become one of the terror hubs in South India.

The raid had yielded several weapons, bombs, a human dummy for target-practising and several Islamist pamphlets and Iranian identification document, etc. According to the police, the camp was meant for imparting training intended for springing terror acts and in carrying out high-intensity explosions.

The police learned about the terror connections of the camp and the fact that some of those arrested had already received terror training from information gathered during their interrogation. They said some of those held had even planned and executed serious crimes. The case could be handed over to the National Investigation Agency, sources said.

The raid was held at the office building of Thanal Charitable Trust, a body with alleged connections with the Popular Front, whose activists were behind the attack on Prof TJ Joseph of Muvattupuzha, Ernakulam in July, 2010 in which his right hand was chopped off as punishment for setting a test paper in which a question allegedly blasphemed Prophet Muhammad.

Following the indications of the terror link of the training camp and of those who participated in it, Additional Director General of Police (North) Shanker Reddy reached Kannur. Raul R Nair, Superintendent of Police, Kannur cancelled his leave considering the seriousness of the case and conducted inspection at the facility.

Apart from weapons, bombs and bomb-making materials, the police had also seized an Iranian identity card and foreign currency from those taken into custody generating suspicions that they could have foreign connections too. The police have got indications that the arrested persons had been receiving money and telephone calls from abroad.

The articles seized from the facility during the raid included flags and pamphlets of the Popular Front, its political wing Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and the National Development Front, the former Avatar of the PFI. Police officials said that a detailed report on the findings would be submitted to the State Home Department immediately.

A document in which names of several leading personalities and details of their organizations and institutions and vehicles had been written had also been seized from the facility. The police suspect that this could be a hit-list. Sources said that the facility was a permanent training camp that could have been in operation for the past two years.

The Popular Front leadership and those arrested claimed that a Yoga training programme was being held at the facility as part of a personality development programme the outfit had organized. However, the police during questioning learned that the trainers did not have even the faintest ideas about Yoga.

Abdul Aziz of Mattannur, one of the trainers at the camp, is the first accused in the case pertaining to the brutal murder of a Hindu Aikya Vedi leader eight years back. Another trainer, Fahad, is an accused in a case pertaining to the attempt to murder a CPI(M) worker. The police said several of those arrested had been involved in various crimes.

Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran said the Kerala Police was presently probing the matter effectively and that the NIA would take over the case if necessary. The Opposition leader wanted the probe to be handed over to the NIA.

Decision to slap UAPA on PFI activists right: Thiruvanchoor - The New Indian Express

As the Popular Front of India (PFI) carries out a state level campaign against the slapping of UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) on 21 of its activists, after a raid conducted in a training camp in Narath, Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has categorically stated that the evidences unearthed by the police team are sufficient enough to prove that the action taken by the police is right.

"The State Government has no intention to register false cases against any persons or organisations. The investigating officers have charged sections of the UAPA on the arrested PFI activists after analysing evidences gathered from the raid. The latest developments of the enquiry have further vindicated the police action. Moreover, the government has passed all the evidences to the Ministry of Home Affairs," Radhakrishnan told Express.

Soon after the raid at Narath and the arrest of PFI workers, the PFI leadership had launched a counter propaganda against the action, alleging high-level conspiracy, and kicked off a state-wide 'Jana Vicharana Yathra' against the UAPA. It also brought out a list of incidents of bomb explosions in which CPM and RSS men were implicated but were not booked under the UAPA. "The police have slapped the draconian provisions of the much-maligned UAPA on PFI workers who were engaged in physical-fitness activities in Kannur.

Whenever the police raid CPM or RSS training camps they book them only under normal laws. This is a clear sign of a police bias against Muslim youths. A section of the police is working not only to harass but also to cook evidences against the organisation," alleged O M A Salam, general secretary, PFI.

According to the police, the preliminary evidences gathered from the probe are more than enough to prove that the accused were involved in anti-national activities.

"Unearthing bombs and lethal weapons from various political outfits is not unusual in Kannur. We have imposed UAPA charges not just because of the bombs and swords.

In this case, there are strong evidences of suspicious foreign fund flow, links with terrorist outfits, human shooting targets, community-wise statistics of people, literature showing the necessity of increasing the population of Muslims etc.

Besides, the police recovered a comprehensive list from PFI worker Khamarudeen's house which details attacks perpetrated by Bajrangdal from 1992 to 2009. All these evidences have prompted the police to slap UAPA," a senior police officer said.

There are intelligence reports suggesting that the PFI might attempt to divert the case through a counter propaganda, including allegations of police torture against the arrested men, sources said.

Islamists ran jehadi camps in Kannur: Cops

The Kerala Police, probing the case of Islamist outfit Popular Front of India's (PFI) training camp they had raided at Narath, Kannur on April 23, have learned that Islamists have been holding jehadi recruitment camps regularly in the northern Kerala district for the past several years.

The police have reportedly found that it was the terror recruitment camps held in Kannur that had produced most of the major accused in cases pertaining to the important terror strikes that had taken place in the country in the past 15 years. They have handed over a detailed report in this regard to the NIA which is expected to take over the probe in the PFI camp case soon.

According to sources, the investigators have discovered that the training camp held at Narath was indeed a part of this extremist operation. They have also learned that a special group constituted to be available for anything at any given time had been using special phones to contact all participants of the camp simultaneously.

The main mission of the terror camps held in Kannur so far was to instill jehadi ideas in the minds of the participants, the police said. Participants of such camps had been involved in several terror cases, including the April 17 blast outside the BJP office in Bangalore, sources said.

It is said that the four Keralite extremists killed in Kupwara, Kashmir in October, 2008 while trying to cross over to Pakistan for terror training were products of a jehadi recruitment camp held in Kannur. Also, recruits from such camps were involved in planting of bombs in various places and several murder and attempt-to-murder cases, the police sources say.

"In this sense, the raid on the PFI camp at Narath has been very crucial," said a police source. Some of the 21 PFI activists arrested during the raid at the Narath camp could have had links with terror men like Sarfaraz Nawaz, who had arranged part of the funds for the 2008 Bangalore bombings, and several hardcore jehadis whom the NIA was looking for, he said.

Apart from the arrest of the 21 PFI men, the raid at the Narath training camp had yielded several weapons, bombs, bomb-making material, a human dummy used in target-practising, pamphlets and flags of the PFI and its political wing SDPI and an Iranian identification document, which caused suspicions of the camp's foreign links.

The police have reportedly collected enough evidence on the connection of the organisers of the camp at Narath with terror modules in other States. It is said that certain people with terror links from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh had been in contact with the organisers of the PFI camp at Narath.

"There is every reason to believe that Kannur has been the capital of Kerala-based jehadi preparations though they had seemingly taken particular care not to spring serious strikes in the State. It is quite clear that many of the accused in several terror cases had at some point of time come into connection with persons in Kannur," said a police official.

FYI Popular Front of India is the organisation whose members chopped off the hands of one Professor Joseph for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad. PFI also also has a political wing called SDPI that has well in neighboring Karnataka elections.
