S.Korea Steps Up Defense Buildup as China's Military Power Grows

The Chinese Academy of Sciences projected in 2008 that China will be able to match the U.S. in terms of military power after 2050 at the earliest, while it will take a further 20 or 30 years to finally catch up -- making it difficult for China to overtake the U.S. in this area within this century.

But some experts say Beijing is being excessively humble in making such projections, as the country has made strides in recent years in boosting its naval, air, space and missile capabilities. China's first aircraft carrier, the remodeled 67,000-ton Varyag, which was purchased from Ukraine back in 1998, went on its test voyage last year. The country is also expected to launch its first homegrown aircraft carrier around 2015.

The world caught a glimpse of China's naval ambitions through the so-called "island chain" strategy revealed by Navy Commander Liu Huaqing during the 1980s. China's maritime defense boundaries are formed by a primary island chain composed of Okinawa, Taiwan and the South China Sea, and a secondary island chain made up of Saipan, Guam and Indonesia.

Liu said at that time, "We will establish control of the primary island chain by 2010 and the second one by 2020, while resisting U.S. domination of the Pacific and Indian oceans by 2040."

The Chinese Navy Commander is wrong by atleast 2 years. And he doesn't seem to be getting his prediction right anytime soon!

You gotta give it to the Chinese! Even when they were in a not-so-great situation economically in the 1980s, they were making such audacious claims. No wonder some of the Chinese kids who post on defence forums sound so out-of-the-world! Is it too much testosterone or too much melamine in their diet?

China's 'peaceful' predictions that they are way off, is another disingenuous assertion to encourage complacency in all.

They are making great and phenomenal progress in the defence arena.

It is time to sit up and smell the coffee.

The US is correct in scuppering up the peripheral countries and containing China!

Even Japan is abandoning all the pacifist claptrap with the encouragement from the US.

The US policy has even disarmed Myanmar and is about to topple an outpost of China looking into the Indian Ocean!

The US has signed a bill to stop aid to Pakistan. So, another cookie of China is set to crumble.

Japan does not need US' encouragement to take a more defensive approach to China. Japan of all countries in the SEA region has suffered the most provocations from China. The neighboring countries in the South China Sea (the Philippines call the waters adjacent to their West as "West Philippine Sea" now) also do not need reminders from anyone of the growing danger that is China.

US making a significant marine base near Australia.
South Korea steps up it's defense.
Japan leaving it's pacifist nature and may start defense exports.
Vietnam in challenging mood against bullying by China.
    Burma tilting towards US.
India having plans of sending it's navy in South China sea.

So more and more countries waking up against ever increasing Chinese threats and so called "peaceful Chinese rise".

    Yah, with 2500 soldiers.
Of course, North Korea got nothing to do with this.
Of course, the failing economy got nothing to do with it.
Yah, You have just found out about this when the fact is that it has been going on since the 70s. Where were you for the past 40 years? Wait, dont tell me you were born just recently....
Having plans is the key words here.

Good point about the number of troops in Australia, but they are US Marines and would not like to be called soldiers.
