New Navy chief to be named soon, Antony says

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The next Indian Navy chief will be named soon, defence minister AK Antony said on Saturday.

"If someone decides to resign, it's that's the individual's choice. Normally it (selection of service chiefs) happens as a natural process and currently the selection process is in the final stages. The next naval chief would be announced soon," Antony told reporters here.

The force has been headless since the resignation of Admiral DK Joshi following a series of accidents that claimed a number of lives

"Accidents do take place and every time they happens, a court of inquiry is ordered. Once it is done, appropriate action is taken," said Antony, who is in Kerala to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, to be held across the state April 10.

Asked about the numerous controversies affecting the defence ministry over the years, he retorted: "Can you point out any allegation that was made and was dumped in the dustbin? Instead, tough action has been taken," Antony maintained.

He pointed out that legal measures have been taken whenever contracts have been cancelled, adding defence procurement decisions in India are not political.

"Stringent action has also been taken when there has been a lapse and we even blacklisted six of the world's leading defence suppliers. We also faced criticism when contracts were cancelled and it was said it would lead to slackening of modernization. Despite all this, modernization has taken place full steam and navy has been the biggest beneficiary. It has got new platforms and equipment," said Antony.

He also pointed out that it was the practice to surrender a portion of the defence budget but in the past five years, this had not happened.

Antony has written himself into the record books by becoming India's longest-serving defence minister following an uninterrupted run from 2006.

I like this chap Anthony.

He really takes time to take a decision.

Is he a cautious chap or is he a plain dithering wonder?

Antony has written himself into the record books by becoming India's longest-serving defence minister following an uninterrupted run from 2006.
And also that he is the Defence Minister, because of whose dithering and taking no action, India's defence stands nude!

Talking about Military affairs, Changing of chief is a matter of Military affairs not public so then why is this articles and others ?, Perhaps an invitation to arms dealers ..

As the process to select navy chief reaches its last leg, Vice Admiral RK Dhowan, who is also officiating chief of naval staff after admiral DK Joshi's sudden departure, is emerging as the frontrunner for the top post.
Defence minister AK Antony, who returned to his office after a fortnight of electioneering, has forwarded his recommendation to the Prime Minister's Office, which has been kept as'top secret'by the government. Sources have indicated that the defence minister AK Antony has recommended Admiral RK Dhowan's name for the top post.
But the final decision will be taken by prime minister Manmohan Singh, who heads the Appointments Committee of Cabinet. Once, the Prime Minister's Office clears the appointment after consultation with the union home minister, who is also a member of ACC, the file goes to the Cabinet Secretariat before it reaches its final destination i.e. President's Office. Only after President's nod, a formal announcement will be made by the defence ministry.

Indian Navy, one of the world's largest navies, has been running'headless'for over 50 days and UPA-II government was not been able to appoint head of Indian navy calling the situation as'unprecedented'. Ministry was doing background checks of all shortlisted candidates by collecting inputs from Intelligence Bureau.
Available indications have suggested that amongst the shortlisted candidates, Vice Admiral RK Dhowan's name is figuring prominently. Three top most admirals, including Western Naval Command chief Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha, Vice Admiral Robin Dhowan and Eastern Naval Command chief Vice Admiral Anil Chopra for the race to succeed Admiral Joshi, who resigned on February 26 for taking moral responsibility for repeated mishaps involving warships.
An official on the condition of anonymity told dna that considering the senior most admiral could be a tough decision for the ministry.
"Admiral DK Joshi resigned because of accidents of naval ships, which mostly happened in the western command. In a way, western command head should also be held responsible for mishaps."
Though, there were some issues with RK Dhowan as well, as he has never headed a command, there is no written rule against him to become the chief.
However, superseding was the only issue which AK Antony-led defence ministry was considering.

yet to see if he is strong and backs indigenisation
All Navy Chiefs will have to support indigenisation since they don't have much genuine reasons for buying foreign...

What we have to see is he a strong leader and go against MOD if needed ....
