OtoBreda 76/62 Super Rapid Deck Cannon

The Otobreda 76 mm gun is a naval artillery piece built by the Italian defence conglomerate Otobreda.Otobreda 76mm Compatto cannon system is compact enough to be installed on relatively small warships, like corvettes, avisos (a vessel somewhere between a corvette and a patrol boat), or patrol boats. The gun's high rate of fire makes it suitable for short-range anti-missile point defence, and its calibre also allows it to function in anti-aircraft, anti-surface, and ground support roles. Specialised ammunition is available for armour piercing, incendiary and directed fragmentation effects and there is also a new guided round that is supposed to be able to destroy maneuvering anti-ship missiles. In recent years a new stealth cupola has been offered.

Super Rapid

Also called the "Super Rapido" this weapon, developed in early '80s, is the most up to date development of the Italian 76mm naval cannons, with an increased rate of fire of 120 rounds per minute. To achieve the higher rate of fire the Super Rapido requires a specially developed round that can be raised, loaded and chambered at higher speeds. While the older 76mm Allargato and 76mm Compacto can fire the new special round, it does not increase their rate of fire. Even the Super rapido can only fire at 120 rounds per minute in short bursts, despite the water cooling of the barrel.

In the anti-missile defense role, citing it as being capable of countering several subsonic missiles from 6,000 to 1,000 meters away. 76mm Super Rapido turrets. The longer range means one single gun can engage more than one missile in a single engagement, and minimizes the danger posed by fragments and splinters if a missile is destroyed close to the ship. The 76mm was also capable of being used versus surface targets, being a medium calibre gun with relatively long range

Valcano 76/62 mm ER ammunution

In order to develop the maximum potential from those guns, OTO has developed and is continuing to develop a complete family of Guided and Intelligent ammunition.

=========================

It has a projectile equipped with an inertial/GPS mid-course guidance system and an IR homing guidance system, designed to engage naval targets at very long ranges.

The IR homing system, which is activated during the terminal attack phase of the flight, within a few kilometres of the target, allows final course correction. The hit probability is therefore extremely high, independent of the range.

Now with these advance in ammo technology One don`t need Anti-ship Missiles to engage Ship at 70-90kms away, When this technology is available in most Indian Navy Ships armed with Oto Melara 76/62 Super Rapid gun..

It has a projectile equipped with an inertial/GPS guidance system for the engagement of fixed coastal targets. The projectile is fired to a very high altitude and, during the intermediate phase of its trajectory, it performs a constant angle gliding descent that allows a considerable increase in range. By integrating the data coming from the inertial and GPS guidance systems, the projectile's control unit commands its canard control surfaces and steers it towards the target's position.

A variant to this configuration is being developed which, by making use of a semi-active laser (SAL) terminal guidance system, will allow the engagement of moving targets illuminated by an observer on the ground or by an UAV. In any case, the achievable accuracy is in the order of a few metres.

Its available for both 127mm gun as well as 76mm gun..

Naval Gun is designed to endure more tear so does made from very specific alloys to resist sea water and corrosion, These guns tube are more thick and more heavy almost three times the weight of a Field tube arty of same caliber, The Reloading is computer / mechanical controlled with rate of fire ( 120 rnds per min ) the system of reloading is very different to increase rate of fire compare to field tube arty..

Where as normal field arty is a piece of tube made from alloys to resist high pressure and tear, It have mechanical or manual reloading and slow rate of fire ( 8-10 rnd per min ) not for fast firing and designed for mobility so its much lighter..

Oto Melara's 127-64 main gun for the new Indian frigates

Working closely with Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) through an open agreement, Oto Melara has been exporting naval guns since the mid-Nineties to the Indian Navy. The staple has been the 76/62 calibre Super Rapid (SR) light-weight gun with anti-surface and air defence capability which are currently deployed on board 22 Indian Navy and Coast Guard ships. BHEL has been license-producing these guns since 1995. According to Oto Melara officials, the agreement with BHEL entails even exports of these guns, if BHEL gets the opportunity. Among the future opportunities, Oto Melara is confident of its 127/64 Light-weight naval gun mount, which it has offered to the navy for its new class of stealth frigates along with its precision guided munition Vulcano. Currently in the development phase, Vulcano guided by GPS will have an extended range of over 100km. Oto Melara is confident that it will start production in five years.
With shrinking global markets, India is the partner of choice for Finmeccanica

Some Info On Oto Melara's 127-64 main gun >>

Adding more information on the workpiece 127/64 LW OTO-Melara and the development of new ammunition for this new piece of the OTO-Melara, this program after the problems faced by the cannon ammunition ERGM mod.4 of Mark 45 United States, put the 127/64 LW Vulcano ammunition and expectant position in the market for naval artillery and its derivatives. The ammunition developed for the 127/54LW and 127/64LW and modifications to their charging system 127 / 54C "Compatto" is the Vulcan with sub-caliber projectile driven not rocket thanks to its higher muzzle velocity (1200m / s) has increased in scope with the previous standard ammunition of the compacts was up to 40 km, plus the Vulcan finned type LR Canard precision guide can plan to achieve ranges of up to 120 km, as appeared in recent publications as described in the recent Exponaval 2008.

Utube presentation :

The Oto Melara 127/64 Lightweight (LW) naval Gun Mount is a rapid fire gun mount suitable for installation on large and medium size ships, intended for surface fire and naval gunfire support as main role and anti-aircraft fire as secondary role.

The 127/64 LW Naval Gun Mounts includes a Vulcano module, which acts twofold:

- Programmer for ammunition's fuse and guidance system
- Mission Planning and Execution for Naval Fire Support Action (firing solutions, selection of ammunition, definition of trajectories and firing sequences, ballistic computations accounting for ammunition type, etc.), as a standalone or in interaction with ship's Network Centric System

i hav read in some places that main gun aboard kolkata class is a 127mm gun
and another thing is that though no clear report, from what little is seen in old pictures of the ships at dry dock, it seems like a stealth cupola and i havn't seen any russian naval gun on our ships having stealth cupola.

Probably, I must have asked this question before.

Can the ship command, guide both the SAM and cannon over the incoming missile at the same point?.Do their have different radars?

If the cannon is really capable to engage Ships at 70-90kms away, Then it would very useful against less threat targets and cost effective. Modern ASMs are expensive, a single Brahmos cost around 2-4 million.
