“Indian Navy will protect any Indian asset worldwide including ONGC Videsh assets in South china Sea,” said Vice Admiral (VADM) DK Joshi, who is the Flag Officer commanding, Western Naval Command. He was speaking to the press on board the Indian Aircraft carrier INS Viraat. The interaction with the press was organised for the formal announcement of upcoming Naval fleet review on 22nd December.
    ..........
..........On the question if Indian Navy will respond to Chinese Naval aggression in South China Sea and if it is Vietnamese Navy’s duty to protect ONGC Videsh assets in its territory, the admiral said “these modalities are being worked out from diplomatic and policy level. It is up to the Indian Navy to protect its assets in South china sea and it cannot be offloaded to Vietnamese Navy.” VADM DK Joshi denied that India is contemplating any bases overseas including Vietnam.

Why Viet navy should protect Indian interests in the first place?

Exploration is not major as of now to setup naval base out there. However navy's fleet is capable enough to guard the ONGC drilling locations.

He says policies & modalities are being worked out so at max expect logistical support agreements at viet ports.

Military co-operation will be not be as aggressive as it is expected but deep political dialouge is at place which will bear fruits if power centres in vietnam echo similar voices.

.....which makes a shooting game all the more possible and hence more need for some sort of 'fallback' measure.
