Introduction

Each upgrade costs $80 million and involves a complete overhaul of the submarine and its hull structures; installation of an improved control system, sonar, electronic warfare system, and an integrated weapon control system.

Four submarines - INS Sindhuvir, INS Sindhuratna, INS Sindhughosh, and INS Sindhuvijay - have already been overhauled at the Zvezdochka shipyard in Severodvinsk, which is getting ready to overhaul the fifth - INS Sindhurakshak.

INS Sindhurakshak Overhaul
A deal to overall INS Sindhurakshak was signed on June 4, 2010.

The floating dock - Rolldock Sun - carrying the submarine on board left India for Severodvinsk on June 20, 2010. It arrived there on August 3.

Overhaul of the sub is expected to take between 2-2.5 years.

The submarine will be fitted with the Club-S missile system, and the Indian developed USHUS sonar and CCS-MK communication system.

INS Sindukirti Overhaul

Severodvinsk shipyard is concurrently repairing and modernizing INS Sindukirti in her basing site Vishakhapatnam, India.

IN Project 636 / Kilo class submarine fleet

The IN Project 636 / Kilo class submarine fleet comprises the following subs.

Max Dive Depth.......350 m (1,200')
Range..............6,000 miles
Crew..................57
Armament.......... 2x533
Max Surface Speed 10 kts
Max Submerged Speed 19 kts
Endurance 45 days
Max Depth 300m

Russia has built Kilo-class submarines for India, China and Iran.

Club-S Missiles

All 10 IN Kilo class subs are also being retrofitted with Club-S submarine cruise missile family.

The Club-S 3M-54E1 is a subsonic sea skimming (100') anti-ship missile which accelerates to supersonic speeds during its terminal phase covering the last 15 km in less than 20 seconds, making if difficult for anti missiles defenses to engage it.

The missile can be launched from a 533 mm torpedo tube from a depth of 35 to 40 meters (130 feet). It can also be launched from a vertical launch tube.

It uses an ARGS-54 active radar seeker and Glonass satellite and inertial guidance.

Club-S 3M-54E1
Weight 4,400 lb
Warhead 440 lb
Range 300 km
Terminal Speed 3,000 kph

INS Sindhugosh and INS Sindhuvijay have already been equipped with the Club-S cruise missile systems.

The upgrade wasn't smooth. After INS Sindhuvijay was upgraded, six test firings of the Club-S missile in 2007 failed and India refused to accept the submarines which spent two years in Russia. The technical glitches were eventually sorted out.

The Zvezdochka shipyard will install Club-S cruise missile systems on four Kilo class diesel submarines in service with the Indian navy in the next five years.

"The new missile system will be installed on the INS Sindhuratna, INS Sindhuraj, INS Sindhushastra, and INS Sindhuvir. The retrofit will be carried out at Indian shipyards," the shipyard in northern Russia said in a statement.

I think this issue has already been sorted as specified by above given link after their failed trial in 2007. May be this Club S must not be active on all submarine other then newly upgraded.

yeh sorry its Project-877

Sindhughosh class submarines are Indian variants of the Kilo class diesel-electric submarines in active service with the Indian Navy.
The Sindhughosh submarines, designated 877EKM, were designed as part of Project 877, and built under a contract between Rosvooruzhenie and the Ministry of Defence (India).

So does that means that only 6 out of the 10 Kilo subs will get the Club-S ?? What's the current status on the Club-S being operational ?

Russia completes India's submarine modernisation programme

The Hindu : Today's Paper / NATIONAL : Russia completes India's submarine modernisation programme

The INS Sindhurakshak submarine came off the slips at the Zvezdochka shipyard in Severodvinsk on Saturday, marking the completion of a mid-life refit programme for the Indian Navy's Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines in Russia.

During a two-year in-depth modernisation the torpedo-firing INS Sindhurakshak, built in 1997, has been equipped with the tube-launched Club-S cruise missiles effective against surface vessels and submarines at a range of about 200 km. It has also been provided with some Indian-made systems, including a hydro-acoustic "USHUS" complex, a CCS-MK radio-communication system and Porpoise Electronic Support Measures. After going through sea trials and firing tests the submarine will be handed over to the Indian Navy later this year.

The INS Sindhurakshak is the seventh and the last of the 10 Kilo-class submarines that India bought from Russia between 1986 and 2000 to have undergone mid-term repairs and modernisation in Russia. Of the remaining three submarines one was repaired in India and the two others are currently under repair in India.

Even as Russia prepares to deliver the last retrofitted submarine to India, Russia's top shipbuilding official has come up with the idea of a second mid-life repair of the Kilo-class submarines.

"A second repair will add another 5 to 7 or even 10 years to the submarines' scheduled 20-year service life," said Andrei Dyachkov, Director General of Sevmash shipyard, who is expected to take over as the head of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, which controls 70 per cent of Russia's s shipbuilding assets, next month. "This will help the Indian Navy maintain its submarine strength in view of delays in the induction of French-built Scorpene subs and in floating a tender for six more diesel-electric submarines," he said.

The Indian Navy issued Request For Information (RFIs) under the P-75 (I) project way back in 2008. However, it is yet to open a global tender for the submarines. Russia is expected to take part in the tender with its new Amur-1650 submarines, along with France's Scorpio, Germany's Type-214 and Spain's S-80 submarines.

Mr. Dyachkov, who also heads the Rubin Naval Design Bureau, which designed the Amur-1650, thinks the Russian submarine stands a good chance of winning the Indian tender.

"We hope for success and are confident of fulfilling all terms of the tender in the required timeframe," he told The Hindu .

The Amur-1650 makes far less noise than the Kilo-class submarines, which the NATO nicknamed "Black Holes" for their stealth qualities.

The shipbuilder denied media reports that Russia was trying to get the demand for onboard Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system removed from the tender requirements.

"We have designed and built an advanced and safe AIP that generates hydrogen onboard and enables the submarine to stay underwater for much longer time," Mr. Dyachkov said.

Re: Russia completes India's submarine modernisation programme

lol@Amur... Russia refused the Ladas, the engine doesn't put out half the power, software keeps crashing, and the AIP is sitting on a bench. Hope for success... :p

INS Sindhurakshak, which was handed over to the Indian Navy in 1997, has been upgraded under a direct contract between the Zvezdochka shipyard and the Indian defense ministry, signed on June 4, 2010.

"The Indian submarine, which has been repaired and modernized at the Zvezdochka shipyard, sailed for sea trials on Monday," the company said in a statement.

The upgrade program stipulated a complete overhaul of the submarine, including its hull structures, as well as improved control systems, electronic warfare systems, and an integrated weapon control system. The upgrade is reported to cost around $80 million.

The sub is expected to be delivered to India by the end of 2012, following a series of additional tests.

Russia has built ten Kilo class submarines for India and has already overhauled four of them: INS Sindhuvir, INS Sindhuratna, INS Sindhughosh, and INS Sindhuvijay.

The overhauled Indian submarines are equipped with 3M-54 Club-S (SS-N-27) anti-ship cruise missiles, the Indian-developed USHUS sonar, CCS-MK radio communications system and Porpoise radar.

mate that's the reason why the IN selected the Scorpene submarine as our next gen sub but it seems that you guys are taking it too long to build those 6 subs for us:rolleyes:
