The Army and Air Force is always at loggerheads with each other over the use of Air Force for Army ops. The Air Force does not want to be subordinate to the Army and is reluctant to support the Army. This was the case in the past for sure.
The new Cold Start doctrine requires complete synergy between the Army and the Air Force to carry out its surprise attack, which means the Air Force will have to provide close air support to the Army. CAS is something the AF is usually averse to as it things that its primary role is strategic bombing and Air to Air combat.

So is it not time that the Army has its own aviation wing with fixed wing aircraft so that it can take care of its close air support needs and also do away with the lack of coordination with the AF?

If Army has its own Air Wing, then what is the purpose of IAF. Essentially you are saying that make IAF sub-ordinate to Army.

The aim should be better co-ordination between Army and IAF.

The army must have its own air wing so as to have good tactical transport, placing troops BEL, and close air support. It would take out the some of the burden off the IAF and make them concentrate more on achieving air superiority.

i think there is now much better coordination between the three services with a joint command.

but i think the gunships should be commanded by the army aviation core instead of the IAF

It must be understood that an organisation understands it requirement better than a sister organisation.

In war, even though there are ground attack aircraft, which are to be used for tactical air support, but since they are multi capable, it is obvious that they will be first used for air force tasks and then for the Army. This does affect ground operations, which require a quick and deep penetration and air is a great force multiplier and a MUST!

Likewise, the helicopters are basically for tactical air support and that is the Army’s realm.

Which arm or service will understand tactical requirement better? The Army or the Air Force?

ray sir can you put light on how the coordination/priority of operations between the airforce and the army has changed after The military adopted the cold strike doctrine and put in place a joint command?

The joint exercises held since 2004 to validate Cold Start showed the coordination or the lack of it between the AF and Army though it will get better with time.
If the Army has its own air assets, it will be better served with the new network centric warfare that it is putting in place to call in its own aircrafts for CAS. The Cold Start doctrine calls for a massive use of fire power from different directions to confuse the enemy and also take by surprise. Quick and massive thrust into the enemy territory will require sustained air support. If the army has its own air power like A-10s it could call upon it to neutralize enemy tanks and artillery.
The AF in the mean while will attain air superiority and also undertake bombings of strategic targets and not be tied down to provide CAS.

Why do we need A 10s we can rather use attack choppers in large numbers...The A 10s hare also hard to maintain.

Choppers cant do what fixed winged aircrafts and vice versa.
We have the RFPs for choppers for the IA which is keen on the Apache.

    -transport helo's
    -Attack Gunships
    -Ground Attack Fighters
is more than enough for Army.

may be these should be under the control of Army only.

Yusuf, I dont think the Army has the funding to operate something like the A 10, But we can modify the IJT to do that. It is small and has a low altitude manueverablity, I would rather let us have CAS aircrafts than the Ground attack ones.

I think this is a question that has dogged many militaries of the world. USA has also had this debate AFAIK.

The AF does want to guard it's turf and not allow any other military wing to have any air assets but then it has it's own priorities and that leads to less than optimal overall war effort.

I have read several accounts of PAF not coming to the rescue of Pak navy and army and saying "Let them fight their own battles"!

Sorry for being a bit off-topic here, but I think the army and navy should have their own assets fir their tactical needs.

We don't want the sibling rivalry to get in the way of achieving the missions.

The navy has its own commandos, air wing and obviously naval assets. Thats the only arm that does not have to depend on others.
