Russia's Sukhoi aircraft maker has started tests of a new onboard AESA radar system for the Indo-Russian 5th generation T-50 fighter jet, the company said on Wednesday.
The new X-band active phased array AESA radar has been installed on the third prototype of the T-50 fighter and showed a stable and effective performance comparable with the most advanced existing radar systems.
The AESA radar has been developed by the Moscow-based Tikhomirov Scientific Research Institute of Instrument Design using elements of nanotechnology.
It has an extended target acquisition range, works simultaneously in “air-to-air” and “air-to-ground” modes, allows attacking multiple targets, and provides electronic countermeasures capabilities.
The T-50, also known as project PAK-FA, first flew in January 2010 and was first publicly revealed at the Moscow Air Show in 2011.
At present, three T-50 prototypes are being tested under a PAK-FA test and development program while a fourth plane is expected to join the program this year.
The Russian Defense Ministry is planning to purchase the first 10 evaluation example aircraft after 2012 and then 60 production standard aircraft after 2015.
But there are reports that NIIP Thikomirov research institute will develop separate AESA for indian version of PAKFA aka FGFA!!! may be watered down version of original PAKFA AESA.....JMT...Beggars are no choosers!!!!.
Are french going to agree to that? French won't give full TOT for AESA radar & will not allow russians developers get their hands on this for customization on FGFA for free.
i don't think they have much choice becuase they need money bad without india there are not that many countries buying rafael's and also they are breaking away from the Nato more and more as nato is benig controlled by U.S. they are moving in with india and BRICS soon BRICS will have french
No Venkat. According to the reports our AESA will be much more advanced than what's going on the Russian version. When I say advanced, it will be beyond both PAKFA and the F-22.
Beggars are no choosers, but we are billionaire philanthropists considering the way things are proceeding.
Similarly, our version of the P-8 Posiedon will be superior to the American version. We will have 360degree capability as well as AEW&C capability on our P-8Is.
You are right. Other than the fact that the French will not allow it, the RBE-2AA will not be anywhere close to NIIPs new radar for FGFA.
Israel will not be transferring anything to India either.
FGFA is a 2019-20 project, so we will see far superior versions of radars than the ones available today. Even the APG-77 will see a more advanced version, but it may not be as good as what the IAF wants on FGFA.
