Do not rush to buy anything. Keep the bribery packed dealers out. But buy for next 30 years. Until then the existing air defense systems are good. They have to shoot Pakistani planes which the existing systems can handle. Chinese will always theaten in the mountains of Tawang or Ladakh but stay out of a shooting context, because their modern planes would fly from far away bases (none in the neigbourhood to fly high performance planes from 7,000 ft) with tired pilots and easy prey to the Indian Airforce before they meet the local air defense system.
mistral 2 can be quick reaction short range point defence sam to replace trishul but if the army's requirement is manpads them igla-s is the best option.other missiles here are crew portable.
Upgraded stinger and/ or Igla should be ideal, i think the need should be for a shoulder fired missile, such extensive kit makes deployement slower, we need missiles on the ready at a moment's notice, upgrade stingers too have a long range of around 8 km. or even better go in for a Indo / US / Israeli co developement of the replacement for the stinger, put in a mini version of the python 5 or aim-9x 2 seeker on an updated stinger body with higher g-tolerances, the missile and launchers made lighter with composites and you have a cutting edge missile that could be manufactured locally at a lower cost per missile.
I would personally go for quick developement with Israel or unkil or both.
WELL thats a criteria which needs to be seen like shoulder fire criteria which IGLA among all the contenders only has.
But if that's not the criteria then of course star strek is the most advanced among them
Agreed, we should opt for commonality to keep the costs & logistics issues to a minimum. IGLA-S should suffice, although Starstreak seems to be more advanced than the rest . Of course next step should be to develop/ co-produce something with Help from Khan or the Israelis.
