For all of Slumdog's soaring success, it seems to put in the minds of many a viewer a negative image of the city of Bombay. Sure, Bombay has slums and shanty towns, and a good many of its people live in favelas, but these are so densely populated, so tightly packed that it means they are confined to only sections of the city, and Mumbai, most certainly, is not one vast slum. The following pics are an attempt to portray Mumbai as much of it stands. Enjoy...

The best thing I've always liked about Mumbai are the colonial structures in the South... Sure, I've lived in Powai and places like Hiranandani et al are good, but I believe the real heritage and beauty is in the South of the city... So, am posting some of the images that I got my hands on...

The 'burb of Powai.

Mulund E.

Mahalaxmi, mid-town at night.

The waterline towards Worli. That skyline has changed much now. Scroll for broader view.

Some 'burb I don't know the name of.

Slums spoil the skyline near the Nehru Science Centre and Planetarium.

Evening fog near the sea bridge.

Near Worli.

The Asiatic Society of Bombay

This building holds one of only two surviving copies of "The Divine Comedy". The Divine Comedy held by the society, written by Dante Alighieri in the 14th century.

The book is leather bound and is in a good condition. A visit to the Society by the Italian Minister of Culture in 2002 confirmed that it was in a much better condition than its other survivor which is currently in Milan.
