South Korean Ambassador to India today called for checking a "resurgent China" and said the arms race in East Asia can be cause of concern. "It is in the interest of the Asian region to prevent China, that has increased its defence budget to 750 per cent since the past two decades, from becoming a regional hegemony. "The continuing arms race in the East Asia can be a concern for the regional countries, including India," Korean Ambassador Joon- gyu Lee said at an event here. Speaking at a conference titled: 'India and Korea: New Prospects for Bilateral Co-operation', the Ambassador called for strategic partnership between India and South Korea in strategic areas. "India and Korea share common cultural, political and economic values. Right from having a political system based on liberal democracy to the cultural pathos, both the countries have a lot in common. "The strengths of the Indian economy like defence, space research and airpower as well as Korea's strong shipping industry, can reap combined benefits for both the regions," he said. Lee also noted the importance of Indo-South Korean cooperation in the fields of nuclear energy and maritime security. "Both India and Korea can exchange help with respect to nuclear energy and share crucial information among each other regarding maritime security. With India emerging as a strong force in SAARC and keeping in mind its 'Look East policy', there is a need for combining the wisdom of the region and ensure better co- operation among the regional countries. "This unity of thoughts and action is also crucial for stopping the dominant forces," he said.

Koreans (and Japanese) should share their semiconductor and electronics manufacturing knowhow with India. They needn't do it for free, but have their companies (Samsung, HyundaiSemi, etc.,) open fabs here. Until then, all talk of India-Korea cooperation is bullshit.

For all the millions of Hyundai, Suzuki cars; and Samsung/LG, Sony electronics sold to Indian consumers, they owe us this much, if they ever want a counterbalance to China.

More of egging on India with US nudge.

More in the SCS operating on the same page, the merrier.

India has to chart its own course looking at her own interests.

South Korea is selling high tech jets and frigates to and forging closer military relations with the Philippines over Chinese objections.

India as of now is concentrating more on S.Asia, India is dealing with increasing chinese influence in its neighbourhood and also in IOR. Co operation between India,Japan, S.Korea and other ASEAN countries is good thing.

S.Korea and Japan can invest here in India to revive their economies also ToT in various fields will help India win - win situation for both the parties.

India do not believe in "zero sum game" unlike China, India's rise will benefit its neighbours as well as countries in Asia.

India is in a complicated situation due to China's ambitions. Normally India and China would have existed in a friendly and cooperating stance which is better for Asia.

My belief is that an arms race between India and China is not good.

India cannot counter China even if it allies with USA because of USA's ambiguous stand on China. South Korea and Japan cannot expect India to help much due to this very reason.

The problem is USA does not have a stable policy for Asian States. USA's policy keeps on changing according to situation, which makes it virtually impossible for other States to adjust.

I think South Korea will have to look towards USA for containing China.

South Korea should stop behaving like Amreeka's lap-dog. Japan and South Korea hardly have a functional defence and foreign policy. India has a very limited diplomatic relation with South Korea, in fact our engagements with North Korea has been more frequent and noteworthy. I don't think that many Indians disagree with China's "Asia for Asians" theory.

Why listen to the pawns when we can do direct dealings with the king (USA)?

That is the luxury the US have for being the only Super Power and the most powerful nation on earth. India must limit her exposure to the western economies to avoid becoming another Iran or Russia.

The drama script is simple _ everybody in the game looks to others in the hope of free loading_ Indians pray US manages to contain China at its own cost, SK looking forward to India`s "rise" as a counter balance without moving their own fingers, so on and so forth. In the end nothing happens. Shrewd businessmen wonder why their genius calculation often fails?!

Once upon a time, there was a country made a same deal from USA, the Americans have been regretted everyday. Guess which one this country is. Yes, it was Japan!
20 years later, there was another country offer a even better deal: they asked even less knohow but offer more in return, today the whole developed world is regretting it. Yes, this is China.

Now, what you ask is very few sectors they are still far ahead of China, which means the major source of their profit. They maybe stupid, but not stupid enough to fall in the same trap thirld time. So, if you want these tech, you have to do far more than just counterbalance to China.

By the way, actually, they don't have these technologies (Japan have only a part of them). If you really want them, you should ask: USA and European.

i have simplified your original post to reply to two points
(1) yes it's not good - but it is happening and it is ccp-china which started that ball rolling ref the infamous
1962 border clash
(2) this is a great point ... you have rightly put the ball where it belongs in the USA's court
Until they are serious about India and stabilize their attitudes towards both India and china, we are left
guessing what really is their policy as it is so ambiguous, as you say.

A resurgent, aggressive PRC under the current leadership of CPC is a recipe for disaster - like a runaway train that nobody has courage to stop. The worst will come when and if PRC succeeds in relegating US to number 2
superpower. The only way to prevent that scenario is for SK,Japan,US and EU to help promote high economic growth in India,Vietnam,Philippines and other SE Asian countries. This can not happen unless the latter are willing to open up their economies.PRC is a new rising Nazi power that has to be stopped at any cost.Europe and US got together to crush Hitler's Germany. Now Asia,Europe and US will have to do the same again to stop the menace of another fascist power on the rise. The parallels between 1939 Germany and to-days PRC are unmistakable.

But China claims that it is as harmless as a domesticated pussy.

They deride all talk labelling them as alley cats.

When will S.Korea shift their manufacturing know-how to India? :pound:

Deeds r more important than words - South Korean Companies to Increase Foreign Direct Investment in China | Shenzhen Standard

Japan foreign direct investment into china is down by 43 percent this year, while South Korean foreign direct investment has jumped 33 percent in the first nine months of the year. The investment coming from South Korea cams after Beijing and Seoul strengthen its diplomatic ties in efforts to wrap up free trade talks before the year ends. South Korean President Park Geun-hye and Chinese President Xi Jinping met five times since they took office last year and is planning to meet again during the bilateral summit next month.

Samsung Electronics and Kia Motors are powering the investment drive by expanding production facilities in China as manufacturing is around 90 percent of the total foreign direct investment of South Korea to China. although investment in the less capital intensive retail and wholesale sector increased by 55 percent last year as consumers cash in on the Korean fashion wave which shows a big demand among younger Chinese crows who yearns for South Korean cultural products ranging from cosmetics, music and clothing. And since the South Korean market is relatively small, Korean companies are looking into overseas market to survive.
When SK ambassador talks of India and Korea sharing " common cultural, political and economic values" he actually means the opposite

No, Americans don't regret any of that. They don't regret Japan, because they offered higher quality and lower production costs than the union-infested workforce of the US. Manufacturing deals to China were essential to complete the Sino-Soviet split. Even today, American and European startups are glad they have cheaper manufacturing in Asia, and they'll fight any legislation in Washington that deprives them of access to that. There's no other way you can become a sizable manufacturer in one generation, without access to manufacturing in Asia.

No, they regret. They never thought that Japanese industry can push their own companies to the edge of bankruptcy. But thank god, they still can save themselves by political/military power.

If that is the case, we won't have 2008 crisis.
And "you can't" doesn't mean "You don't regret", why do you think "occupy wall street" come from?
