    India aid to continue: UK

London: Prime Minister David Cameron has re-affirmed Britain's decision to continue its aid programme to India, amidst a row sparked by some ruling Conservative MPs demanding an end to it, and reports that India did not need it.

The Prime Minister's spokesman said: "We have reviewed our aid commitments to India. We continue to think it is right to stick to those aid commitments. We continue to provide aid to India, but we focus it on the three poorest states".

He added: "The reason we are doing that is because a huge number of the poorest people in the world live in these states. The Government has always been very clear about sticking to its aid commitments and the fact that it would not balance the books on the backs of the poorest people in the world. It is going to stick to that."

International Development secretary Andrew Mitchell yesterday defended the aid, and said: "We will not be in India for ever but now is not the time to quit. Our completely revamped programme is in India's and Britain's national interest and is a small part of a much wider relationship between our two countries".

He, however, added: "We are changing our approach to India. We will target aid at three of India's poorest states, rather than central Government. We will invest more in the private sector, with our aid programme having some of the characteristics of a sovereign wealth fund."

International aid is among few areas that have not been subjected to deep funding cuts by the economically-strapped David Cameron government, which has faced much ridicule and more for continuing to send aid to an increasingly prosperous India. .

This is a positive step by UK since MMRCA deal should not be made a ground to cut/continue aid. There are other ways of collaboration too.

Secondly India is not such a prosperous country that some sources try to project and percieve it.The prosperity is not balanced.

Don't worry. We DFItes in most cases do understand a sarcasm when we read it despite english not being our mother tongue, unlike some other forums.

Aid is an important factor how one can influence the activities and thinking in the country where is the aid is being given and not all the influences aimed at are benevolent.

    Spark,

What is the relevance of quoting GK's post from the Thread Kerala and Goa are the Best States to be Born?

Wan't to show your anger at the Moderators?

Take some time off to cool off!

yeah right! We were more prosperous in the 80s when every one of us were begging, not just the poor. The prosperity(???) was more balanced then(!!??).

All socialists who bitch about india's growth story are CHAMPAGN SOCIALISTS. Morons, who dont even realise that they are bitching themselves. Taking that Only 5%(at max 7% this year) of us pay income tax and 7%(max 10% ) have internet access and the gini index is calculated between top 20% and bottom 20%, they bitch that rich grows by eating poor, while no one is ready to blame the poor for being poor(lets just forget the fact that they get all the subsidies in the world which are possible, and they get wasted every night with booze rather than buying something for the family, or simply dont work even if work is available in plenty)

lets just beg the world for more money and paint a picture that we are as beggarly as the porkis or even worse. Sure the world will respect us a lot and will buy our products if we cast ourselves us beggers . get a life before bitching about our poverty will you?

I object to this partly. The poor do work hard to survive (or to earn the money for buying the booze at night). But their productivity is limited by their lack of basic education, to which the fault lies with the govt. for failing to implement a proper education system, not the riches. The working class of India is terribly under-trained. A poper level of training would not only help the poor to get good job, their increased productivity would reflect on our economy too. btw, the way the education system is being modeled now-a-days, copying the western system, the level of education for all the children, irrespective of classes is gonna fall. I remember if I didn't fear a decent beating I wouldn't have bothered to study!

    Mmrca is still not inked.
EF is going to put up a revised bid, just waiting for frenchies to screw it up and then they could pound on deal in no time.

So yea aid will continue till the deal is officially inked.
