Burma's state media has announced that the authoritarian government will release more than 6,000 prisoners as part of a widely-trailed amnesty, which could pave the way for an easing of international sanctions on the isolated country.

In recent weeks Burmese officials have raised hopes that they are preparing to free a significant number of the country's estimated 2,000 political prisoners, although no details on who is to be released have yet been revealed.

China also on the way to Burma. Did see the news about 11 Chinese fisher killed by Burma drag dealer at thiland ?China and thiland confirm that ,but Burma deny that.

the military backed and in power udlp of burma is luring people of burma thru micro finance schemes. they have huge base of govt employees who are bound to vote for this govt and even if aung suyi pulls much of the crowd they are not capable of making them vote for them. though aung suyi is people's fav and people do want her to take seat of pm but it can happen... she wont make it in this elections

Suu Kyi wins Myanmar Parliamentary by-polls

The opposition party in Myanmar claims Aung San Suu Kyi has won a seat in parliament after Sunday's election, setting the stage for the nation's pro-democracy icon to hold public office for the first time.

The preliminary results were displayed on a digital signboard above the opposition National League for Democracy's headquarters in the main city, Yangon.

The results said Suu Kyi was ahead with 65 percent of the vote in 82 of her constituency's 129 polling stations.

The statistics were not official and the election commission has yet to release any outcome of Sunday's by-election.

Multi-party parliamentary by- elections began across Myanmar on Sunday morning at 6 a.m. local time with over 6.4 million eligible voters of 45 constituencies began casting votes at respective polling booths. A total of 157 candidates, representing 17 political parties and 7 individuals, were standing for the by-elections of parliamentary representatives in 9 regions or states.

A total of six parties contested for six vacant seats of the House of Representatives in Yangon region with over 1 million eligible voters from six township constituencies voting as scheduled for the six township constituencies, scattered as Kawhmu, Thonkwa, Dagon Seikkan, Mingala Taungnyunt, Hlegu and Mayangon.

It's a good sign that suu kyi is elected. Considering that these are only by-polls and only around 7.5 % of the total seats in the country are contested, it won't make a big difference or change in leadership. But it's one big step for the country towards freedom of choice.
