Russian Air Force to buy fewer PAK FA fighter aircraft

The military is likely to buy fewer fifth generation T-50 fighters, scaling back requirements to 12 after initially planning for 52, due to economic considerations, Deputy Defence Minister Yuri Borisov has said.

This will increase the pressure for exports to China and India.

India has asked Russia to send a proposal for PAK-FA deliveries from 2018.

A crucial Russian project with such a miniscule procurement plan? Either something went wrong with the conceptual framework and the actual outcome or Russia is working secretly on a more advanced derivative.

It is also possible that Russia will ask India to contribute more on the development of the project and transfer the assembly to India.

The Indian project is called FGFA which includes changes to PAK-FA similar to changes in MKI. FGFA is far from productionisation. However Russian project PAK-FA is close to serial production. There is consideration to import fully built units of PAK-FA from Russia. If the proposal goes through, it should help Russia in maintaining production volumes for PAK-FA.

india not gonna buy much of pakfa either its gonna be fgfa,

and according to wiki its almost twice expensive than pakfa that suggests, pakfa is just basis for fgfa but fgfa gonna be whole new jet and very different than pakfa.

What other options India has?? What if Chinese planes prove far superior to Indian Su-30 etc?? Will you wait for that day when Chinese establish air dominance over Indian skies?

but i thought fgfa is gonna be far more superior than t-50,

also making fgfa, wasnt it gonna be help in making more indigenous tech,

if russia sales t-50 to iran or maybe even to china,india not gonna have any edge on chinese or others either,so fgfa is not important that way.

FGFA is based on PAK-FA. The equipment can be upgraded in batches. No work has been done on "Indian" components of FGFA. The earliest possible date for FGFA is 2022 (for first flight). Can India wait that long?? With this schedule, any induction of FGFA is possible earliest in 2025.

Logical thing is to start acquiring PAK-FA, build familiarity with this aircraft as soon as possible.
