Meteorite Fragments Injure Hundreds in Central Russia

MOSCOW, February 15 (RIA Novosti) – A hail of meteorite fragments has injured hundreds of people in central Russia, health officials confirmed on Friday.
As of mid-day Moscow time, over 700 people had sought medical assistance in the hard-hit Chelyabinsk Region as a result of the strikes, including 159 children, Chelyabinsk city officials said. Health officials said 112 people had been hospitalized in the region, with two reported to be in a "grave" condition. Most people were hurt by shattering glass.
President Vladimir Putin ordered emergencies officials to provide "immediate" assistance to people affected by the meteorite. Gas supplies were cut off to hundreds of homes in the Chelyabinsk region as a safety precaution. An estimated 20,000 emergency response workers have been mobilized.
Background radiation levels reportedly remain unchanged. This was confirmed both by emergencies officials, and by the national nuclear agency, concerned because the area has a fair number of nuclear facilities.
"Verified information indicates that this was one meteorite which burned up as it approached Earth and disintegrated into smaller pieces," deputy head of the Russian Emergencies Ministry press office, Elena Smirnykh, said.
The European Space Agency (ESA) said there was no link between the meteorite and the 2012 DA14 asteroid which is due to pass close by the Earth later on Friday.

Headlines Today, most probably erroneously, had initially reported that the meteorite had been shot down by a Russian Air Defence unit.

Shades of Tunguska: Chelyabinsk crash recalls most powerful meteorite explosion in history

"It looks like it was something like Tunguska – a 60-meter diameter cosmic body, which fell into the Tunguska taiga in 1908," said Professor Oleg Malkov, Head of the Star Clusters Physics Department at the Russian Science Academy Institute of Astronomy, as cited by Komsomolskaya Pravda daily.

Scientists have compared the recent Chelyabinsk meteorite incident to the century-old Tunguska event, a huge explosion allegedly caused by a fragment of a comet or meteor.

According to estimates, the energy of the Tunguska blast may have been as high as 50 megatons of TNT, equal to a nuclear explosion. Some 80 million trees were leveled over a 2,000-square-kilometer area. The Tunguska blast remains one of the most mysterious events in history, prompting a wide array of hypotheses on its cause, including a black hole passing through Earth and the wreck of an alien spacecraft.

It is believed that if the Tunguska event had happened four hours later, due to the rotation of the Earth it would have completely destroyed the city of Vyborg and significantly damaged St. Petersburg.

The Tunguska event also prompted debate and research into preventing or mitigating asteroid impacts.

A huge celestial body known as the Tungus meteorite fell on this spot in Siberia in 1908. Its enigma defies researchers from all branches of science to this day. The comprenensive Tungus Meteorite Expedition has its laboratory on this taiga lake near the Podkamennaya Tunguska river.(RIA Novosti)
Between Tunguska and Chelyabinsk, Russia has witnessed at least three such events. In 1922, a meteor shower rained down on the village of Tsaryov near Volgograd in Southern Russia. Some 1.6 tons of meteor fragments were found there, with the biggest weighing almost 300 kilograms.

Siberia appears to be a real meteor magnet: In 1947, the Sikhote-Alin Mountains were hit by an iron meteor. An estimated 23 tons of extraterrestrial material were eventually found in the area. And just over a decade ago, another asteroid fell near the Siberian village of Vitim. The explosion of the Vitimsky meteorite was relatively weak, reaching only approximately 200 tons of TNT.

As for smaller meteorites, hundreds of them strike the Earth's surface every year, though only 10 to 20 are detected.

"It's impossible to trace them. We only know of big asteroids approaching. I mean space is swarming with little stones – it's no revelation, it's a fact we have to come to terms with. The earth is hit by relatively little space objects every hour," said Kosmopoisk ('Cosmosearch') NGO head Vadim Chernobrov, Kommersant daily reported.

Such meteorites usually reach the surface Earth burned down by the atmosphere and too small to cause damage. According to statistics, only 1 in 100,000 asteroids is potentially destructive.

The oldest discovered meteor was 4.6 billion years old. The largest, the Hoba meteorite in Namibia, weighs over 60 tons. The largest-ever accumulation of meteors was found in the Antarctic in 1979.

Finding a fragment of freshly-fallen meteorite takes a great deal of luck – considering that 97 percent of space rocks found on Earth have fallen long ago. At the same time, being injured by a falling meteorite is an even rarer event: According to NASA, there is a "1 in 3,200 chance of anyone being hit."

@SajeevJino, what do you think? First Pope resigns, then an Asteroid is seen over the sky, all this in the backdrop of Israeli war preparation on Lebanon. Do you think it's really here? ww3?

RT also initially reported that it was shot down. But yeah, it's probably incorrect.

Hmm. Furthermore, it's sort of implausible. The meteorite was moving at 30kmps. Don't think ABMs move that fast.

Those aren't meteors falling, it's the Americans testing new weapons," Zhirinovsky, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, told journalists several hours after the Emergencies Ministry began issuing statements on the incident, which has injured hundreds and damaged scores of buildings.

Yeah, 30kmps, that's like Mach 90. Of course to intercept the meteor one needs to primarily just predict the path. But it becomes very difficult when such gigantic kinetic energy values are involved.

@SajeevJino , Vladimir Zhirinovsky is the founder and leader of the so called Liberal Democratic Party of Russia which is neither liberal nor democratic. Also he is slightly mental.

Roscosmos said they did not track the meteorite that fell near Chelyabinsk. "Our ground facilities and, as I understand, those abroad too did not the monitor this celestial body," the agency spokesman said.
The meteorite's combustion products won't stay in the atmosphere for long, and will soon come down with the rain, Russian scientists said. The 50-ton meteorite is believed to have caused no radioactive or chemical pollution.
The military had nothing to do with the aerial meteorite explosion, the Urals Emergency Ministry said: "Russia's defense ministry took no action connected to the incident. No aircrafts has been registered in the air at the given period of time." Earlier, there were unconfirmed reports that the military had shot down the falling meteorite, shattering it into pieces.
Six cities and four small towns saw damage from the air blast produced by the meteorite, mostly shattered windows, Itar-Tass reported, citing police officials.
The site where the meteorite is believed to have fallen has been closed off by military units wearing special protective suits.

Well, half-serious, yes. It is just around the corner. Just look at the state the world is at. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to predict that a matchstick is all that is needed to ignite the world.
Have you ever heard of WW3 conspiracy in any case? Not all of it is hoax, there is a pattern, one would have to admit.
