AHMEDABAD: Top aircraft makers are planning a Gujarat landing. Lockheed Martin, one of the world's top defence and space aircraft maker, Boeing and Airbus are exploring opportunities to set up aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) units. "One of them is most likely to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a proposed investment of Rs 4,000 crore next month," said a senior bureaucrat. The Gujarat government plans to offer land and other facilities for MRO units near the proposed Dholera International Airport, 100km from the Ahmedabad International Airport, in the Dholera Special Investment Region. Top executives of these companies have also confirmed their participation in the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat event in mid- January. "Considering the huge potential in the MRO sector, we will earmark a special MRO zone in Dholera. This will help generate employment and give a fillip to ancillary industries," the official said. The state's industrial policy of 2009 already accords top priority to MRO units.

MRO hub: Gujarat is planning a special zone in Dholera Besides Dholera, Gujarat is also planning an MRO facility at Ankleshwar along with a private airport to mainly handle cargo. "Airports managed by AAI have MRO facility but this will be the first private airport to have such a facility," said Captain Ajay Chauhan, director, Gujarat State Aviation Infrastructure Company Ltd (GUJSAIL). The MRO facility at Ahmedabad airport is also managed by GUJSAIL which recently handled the maintenance of the jet used by the prime minister to fly within the country.

Tata firm to set up centre for aero engines
Tata Technologies Ltd Thursday announced that it would set up a global engineering centre model for Singapore Aero Engines Services Ltd to jointly offer a range of services in the global aerospace sector.

"The centre will provide engineering services for equipment harmonisation, improvements in workforce efficiency and turn-around time optimisation in enterprises worldwide," the Pune-based Tata group company said in a statement here.

The multi-year deal envisages the Tata firm to provide an expert team for designing ground support and ground handling equipment, process engineering and technology optimisation for the British Rolls Royce Trent engine types to be overhauled at the Singapore partner's facility.

"Through the model, we will leverage Tata's expertise as an engineering partner and technology consultant to develop engine and component repair capability," said the Singaporean company's chief executive Paul Inman.

In the aerospace sector, as meeting customer demands with high reliability and faster delivery are crucial, the Singaporean firm will focus on building quality and reducing costs with the help of Tata.

The 14-year Singaporean firm, which has a tripartite joint venture between SIA Engineering Company, Rolls-Royce plc and Hong Kong Engine Services, has overhauled about 2,000 aero engines for wide body aircraft since its inception in 2001.

Tata Technologies supports clients in 27 countries worldwide through engineering services outsourcing, product development IT services and product lifecycle management solutions.
