Smart City in India: How it can change the face of country
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has often talked of smart cities. Even in his election speeches he had hinted at how this project has occupied his mind. So, as Singapore has offered to build smart cities in India, Narendra Modi government has expressed its keenness for cities like Tianjin knowledge city.
Saying that a strong and vibrant India is essential for peace and stability in Asia, Singapore foreign minister K. Shanmugam has told a daily about how Modi was keen about ports and port management, skill development, building of smart cities and water solutions. Now, the Singapore foreign minister assured to share that country's technology and experience.

Singapore has also offered help in Modi's dream project of building 100 smart cities along the key infrastructure projects such as Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor entailing setting up of seven Greenfield Smart Cities between Delhi and Mumbai with three Smart Cities at Dholera, Shendra-Bidkin and Global City to be built by 2019.

SMART CITIES: WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT CAN TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE
1. China has a Tianjin knowledge city and some smart cities include Suxhou, Guangzhou and Szechuan.

2. Eighteen kilometers off Ahmedabad airport, the Gujarat International Financial Tec (GIFT) City may become the first city in Narendra Modi's dream project.

3. According to reports, this project that costs Rs.70000 crore is spread over 886 acres. The construction that began in 2011 will take a decade to build. Two towers and few banks among others have already signed up.

4. At least 5 lakh direct jobs and an equal number of indirect jobs are promised.

5. At the facility, while solid waste will be sucked out from homes and offices through pipelines leading directly to a waste processing plant, a fully functional GIFT City will have a command centre with information and communication technology infrastructure to manage everyday chores.

6. According to IBM, which is working on 2,500 smart city projects globally, a smart city uses technology to transform its core systems.

7. While the BJP had promised to build 100 hi-tech cities, it takes 20-30 years to build a new city. So, seven new smart cities are being developed along the proposed Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC).

8. A smart city's core infrastructure is information technology, where a network of sensors, cameras, wireless devices, data centres form the key infrastructure providing essential services. Being environmentally friendly, smart cities use sustainable materials for building facilities and reduce energy consumption.

Vijayawada, Vizag to be developed as smart cities: Venkaiah

Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday said Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh would be developed as 'smart cities' He also said that Vijayawada, Guntur and Tenali would be provided Metro rail services. Notably, the State Government had recently announced that the new capital of Andhra Pradesh would be located "around Vijayawada". "As a part of the Centre's decision to develop 100 smart cities in the country for making urban life comfortable by improving living conditions there, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam in AP would get a chance to be developed as smart cities," Mr. Venkaiah said. He was participating in a seminar on 'Smart Cities' conducted by the Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry here. The smart cities would be required to provide round—the— clock drinking water, power, transport and health services at affordable prices to the public, he said. The development of a smart city needs political will and guts to enforce proper taxation system, implement good governance, weed out corruption and check unauthorised constructions, he said. He also appealed to the public to pay taxes properly to avail the amenities and services. The Centre has so far not decided on the places for the smart city project. The State Governments have to propose the names for it, he said. However, the four metros, the capitals of States and major cities and their surrounding areas would be developed as smart cities, he said. Lok Sabha MP G Ganga Raju and Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry President M Murali Krishna were among others present on the occasion.

Private investments to help develop 100 smart cities planned by govt: Venkaiah Naidu

New Delhi: Private sector investments will play a key role in financing and building the 100 smart cities that the government is planning, urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu said at the second annual ET Infra Focus Summit in New Delhi. "I want to make it clear today that the key to building smart cities is private investments. That is how private sector can drive economic growth by investing in urban projects," he said. The other means of resource mobilisation could be through multi-lateral and bilateral development agencies, municipal bonds, pooled municipal debt obligation facility, real estate investment trusts and infrastructure investment trusts. The minister said that a high- powered committee set up by his ministry has reported that Rs 7.5 trillion would be needed over 20 years to improve infrastructure relating to transport, water supply, sewage and sanitation in the selected cities. For just the preparation of detailed project reports and mandatory city development plans for 100 smart cities, state governments will have to spend Rs 5,000 crore, he said. A part of that will be financed by the Centre. The selection of smart cities has been left to the states. "Given the inadequacies of our urban local bodies, we propose to spend 5% central government assistance on capacity building of urban local bodies," he said.
