Indian Railways’ strained financial condition compelled yesterday’s decisions to raise freight rates by around 20 per cent.

However, the rise would hit harder at the existing problem of competing with road transport. “To do this without raising passenger fares is not right. This is subsidising household consumption from industry and will definitely result in reducing the railways’ freight share, compared to roads,” said Rajiv Kumar, secretary general of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry

Industries must not be subsidized, FULL stop. Passenger fair cannot be compared with freight.

Do you know freight fares is among the highest in the World ? This will make manufacturing further uncompetetive .

I dont think its industries being subsidized! Rather, its making Industries pay more so as to subsidize passengers!

They have been increasing only freight charges from years without any increase in passenger fares. Our manufacturing costs are higher than China and transportation bottlenecks are one of the main reasons for this. We need more trains and faster as well. With railways being populist instead of pragmatic, we will continue to lag when compared to rest of the world.

if we can kill of all our CONs and their allies , i think we will not have any problem in this country. But Since the freight charges have been raised instead of just leaving the railways to rot, which would have happened if a regular CON man was in power, we can just maim Didi instead of K**ling her.

These CONs and their allies will not stop till our GDP tanks back into 2%per annum growth rate and inflation goes through the roof. But on the bright side, Atleast after that we have to see if the Liberals and other great intellectuals of the country are ready to vote these CONs out.

Of course passenger fares cannot be compared with freight. The reason is passenger fares are subsidised while freight is often overcharged.

I would disagree with you. It is industry that needs subsidy, but if that cannot be done, then the first thing is to be done with passenger fares altogether.

Somebody needs to wean these freeloaders off momma's teat! If they are more than happy, and fully capable, to pay the full market price to travel in privately owned transport, they should be willing to do that when traveling by trains as well.

this is tru on both accounts and i am afraid will remain so when CONs are in power. they dont care about India as long as they get to win the election. they will bankrupt us to win the election and make that RAUL *******d the next PM

Ya, this i two hundred percent true.. these freeloaders are ready to pay 700+ rupees for travelling in private buses while they are not ready to pay even 300 for trains. this is the reason i hate lefties. deluded idiots who are lefties because it sounds cool when they speak about leftist policies.

PS: i thought you were a lefty and you have even expressed it yourself, what happened to you all of a sudden

Indian Railway is in a mess.

Populism throughout the ages has ruined it.

Yes, admittedly, I am left of centre, but not the kind of leftism that causes harm.

Arundhati Roy is pretty lefty as well, but supports separatists. On the other had, the USSR would forcefully crush any separatism. Same this with PRC. Good traits, although left liberals won't like it. So you see, these terms are themselves very confusing.

Look at the USA. Very socialist with a system that taxes hard working people so that those that do not work can be fed through food stamps and unemployment benefits. I do not support that kind of leftism, rather, the real ideology reflected by the hammer and the sickle, i.e., hard work that generates the fruits of labour.

You don;t have to be a leftist, socialist, Marxist or communist to agree that the fruits of hard work are always sweet.

Then i dont think you are a leftist nor a center left. You are a center right in the political spectra . But we can debate about it in the Communism/socialism thread if you disagree
