PM Modi to DRDO: Tech to play key role in defence; strive to complete work earlier than the world does

NEW DELHI: Calling innovation the key to making Indian defence research robust, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said, "World is changing very fast and technology is going to play a key role going forward." "Parameters of war are changing; the idea is to keep innovating," he stressed.
Addressing an awards function at DRDO, Modi said, "We need to be prepared to cater to India's defence needs. We should take suggestions from Indian Navy, Army and Air Force." "We should encourage people working in Indian Navy, Army and Air Force to come up with innovative ideas," Modi suggested.
According to Modi, the challenge is to complete work before time. "If the world finishes something in 2020, can we do it by 2018? That is what we should strive for," Modi said
"There is need for ingenuity in defence research and working at a faster pace to make India global leaders. DRDO scientists should come out with innovative ideas to make life more comfortable for jawans," Modi said. "We need labs in India which utilize raw talent, which employ people only below the age of 35," he added.
Last week, Modi inducted the country's largest indigenously built warship, INS Kolkata, into the Indian Navy. Modi had then said that the defence forces will be modernised to ensure that "no one can dare challenge us".
Dedicating the first of the Kolkata Class guided missile destroyers to the nation, he had said military might was the biggest deterrent to war.
"Fighting a war and winning it has now become less difficult these days. But a modern military, armed with state of the art weaponry alone is a guarantee against war. When we are capable, no one can dare challenge us," Modi had said addressing naval officers and sailors at the Naval Dockyard after commissioning the warship.
