More Missile Tests This Month

In a joint effort with Indian Army, DRDO is planning a series of missile tests from a test range off the Odisha coast this month. While a user trial of nuclear capable Agni-I has been scheduled for April 11, an interceptor missile will be tested on April 19. Besides, 12 rounds of Akash missile have been planned to be tested in the next 45 days.:thumb:

Sources said preparation was on in full swing at the Wheeler Island test facility for the training exercise of the Army involving surface-to-surface medium range Agni-I missile. The missile will be test-fired by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Army from the launching complex-IV of the Integrated Test Range (ITR).

"As the missile has already been inducted in the Armed Forces, the test will be conducted by the SFC personnel while DRDO will provide only logistic supports. The missile to be used for the test has been randomly selected from the production lot," said a defence official.

The 700-km range Agni-I is an antiquated short-range and surface based ballistic missile in the Agni series. Compared to its longer-range cousins, its height is just 15 metres and it is powered by both solid and liquid propellants, which imparts it a speed of 2.5 km per second.

The interceptor missile has the capability to kill an enemy missile at endo-atmospheric level.

The interceptor missile will be tested from the launching complex IV. The missile has been developed under the India's flagship Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) programme.

Defence sources said as per the programme the interceptor missile will destroy an incoming hostile missile mid-flight over the Bay of Bengal. This experimentation will be to observe the operational effectiveness of the indigenously developed high-speed interceptor missile.

"During the exercise, a Prithvi missile, modified to mimic a hostile ballistic missile will lift off from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur and it would be destroyed in the endo-atmospheric region (at an altitude of 15 km) by the interceptor fired from Wheeler Island few seconds later," said a defence scientist.

Developed by DRDO, the 7.5 metre tall interceptor is a single stage solid rocket propelled guided missile equipped with an inertial navigation system, a hi-tech computer and an electro-mechanical activator totally under command by the data up-linked from the ground based radar. The missile weighs around 1.2 tonnes and has a diametre of 0.5 metre.

After both the tests, a series of tests of surface-to-air 'Akash' missile has been planned from the Chandipur based test range. The Indian Army and Air Force personnel would carry out at least 12 tests of the missile from April 21.

Akash is India's first indigenously designed, developed and produced air defence system surface-to-air missile capable of engaging aerial threats upto a distance of approximately 25 kms. The Army version of Akash is being produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) as the nodal production agency with the involvement of Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and some other industries. The total production value of Akash air defence systems cleared for induction by Indian Army and Indian Air Force is more than `23,000 crore.

Night trial of Agni-I likely today

Balasore: The Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Indian Army, which had postponed the first night user trial of nuclear capable ballistic missile Agni-I slated February 18 following technical glitch, has made all arrangements to conduct the test tonight between 8pm and 9pm from Wheeler Island off the Odisha coast.

The DRDO scientists are hopeful of a successful launching this time. Earlier, the armed forces had planned to test-fire the missile in full operational configuration between 7 pm and 8 pm.But the countdown was stopped midway following a snag in the mobile launcher. The test was postponed for the second time.

The 15-metre tall, single stage solid-fuelled missile can carry a 1,000 kg payload up to a distance of 700 km. The next launch date would be decided later, DRDO sources said.

the three time windows would be:

1. UTC 0315-0515
2. UTC 1615-1815---Indian time: 21:45-23:45
3. UTC 1445-1815 (on 12th Apr.)

if this test doesn't happen, the next time window would be opened again at the same time of the following day.

As scheduled, the user trial of Agni-I ballistic missile was was conducted by the Strategic Forces Command from the launch pad number 4 at Wheeler island off the coast near Dhamra in Bhadrak district in Odisha at 11. 30 pm tonight, sources said.

It was a night trial of the missile, an experiment which had been put off twice earlier.agni-1

The night trial of Agni-I ballistic missile was earlier scheduled on February 20 but was postponed indefinitely owing to some technical glitches.

The Agni, which has already been inducted in the army, uses solid propulsion booster and a liquid propulsion upper stage, derived from country's first indigenously developed ballistic missile Prithvi.

It was first tested from the same base Jan 25, 2002. Although several trials of the missile has been conducted since then, night trials of Agni-I was planned to reconfirm its technological parameters.

In another fortnight, India will be conducting one of the most complex interceptor missile tests. For the first time a state-of-the-art interceptor missile at supersonic speed will seek to engage and destroy an incoming target missile at a very high altitude of 120-140 km over the Bay of Bengal.

Entirely new interceptor and target missiles have been developed by scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the upcoming engagement, to be conducted in exo-atmosphere (altitude above 40-50 km) on April 27 or 28. The test was originally planned to be conducted in November, 2013 but had been delayed since then.

so far the NOTAM for PDV test hasn't been published yet. Normally such NOTAM is supposed to be heading South (from Chandipur to Wheeler Island )

Akash Sam test is due, but do they issue NOTAM for those?

there are too many NOTAMs every week, I thought such NOTAM(for tactic missile like Akash ) around Chandipur Test Range should be issued as well coz it was Surface to Air Launch,but the forbiden Area won't be much large(Akash's range is under 30KMs) and would be unimpressive on the map......

Nomally we pay more attention to those for Long range strategic missile launch ,BMD tests and Space missions(coz forbiden Area is noticeable relatively ...LOL).

Eg. the NOTAM for IRNSS1B launch...four dropping zone were established for the four finished stages of PSLV ,which is very easy to Identify

the army version Akash was tested intensively in Feb? isn't it?the Archive for the past NOTAM is not available, and I didn't find such info on our forum either( no one noticed or mentioned it).but I would pay a little attention to it next time...

the Restricted Zone for the PDV test has been set...the Restricted Zone's position suggests that the target missile might come from the sea--Dhanush fired from INS Subhadra...

and three time windows were published as well, they are:

Misfortune struck the Akash missile project once again during a user associate trial from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the Odisha coast on Wednesday. The missile, test-fired by the Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel, reportedly failed to destroy the target.
After twin successes in February, this sophisticated surface-to-air nuclear capable missile this time missed the 'missed-distance' proximity. It was the missile's first trial of the three-trial series.
Defence sources said the missile was launched from the launching complex-III of the ITR at Chandipur-on-sea at about 2.43 pm. Prior to firing of the missile, a pilot-less target aircraft (PTA) was flown from the launching complex-II at about 2.30 pm

"The missile was to destroy the PTA at an altitude of nearly 2 km as per the pre-designated coordination. But the mission failed as the weapon could not destroy the target.
Though it attained the desired altitude, it failed to pass through missed-distance proximity," said an official from the launching complex.
The official said generally the missile does not directly hit the target, it passes through the missed-distance proximity, which may be 10 metres, 20 metres or 100 metres as per the coordination, causing auto-detonation of the proximity fuse in the target. "This time the missile passed away from the proximity area," he informed.
Two more rounds of the tests have been planned to be carried out on Friday. "The defence scientists are working to fix the problem and hopefully the missile will be ready for test. The DRDO is providing all logistic supports for the trials," the official added.
