Specialist handlers from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police have trained a team of six Labradors to carry explosives in their teeth, sneak into terrorists' lairs, drop remote-controlled bombs, hide secret cameras, understand instructions in English and Hindi and interpret body language.

Explosives were strapped to Alsatians, which crawled under enemy tanks and were supposed to bite through the straps to leave the bomb to explode on a timer. The animals were later transformed into "suicide" dogs when their handlers decided it was more efficient to detonate the explosives while still attached. More recently the US Navy Seals deployed a dog as part of the raid in which Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan last May.

"It's the first time in India such a dog squad has been successfully trained in dropping of bombs, video and audio devices and other equipment inside enemy hideouts. They will be carrying them in their mouth and drop it inside the suspected hideout and when they report back to their handler and commander, then only the next step will be taken – triggering the blast through remote control," said DK Pandey, spokesman for the Indo-Tibetan Police Force.

He said the dogs had been trained to snatch and retrieve weapons from enemy suspects to establish whether they are dead or alive following an attack and to count in preparation for operations. "If there are five enemies inside a hideout the trainer will say 'three plus two' and the dog will bark five times," he added.

The development is controversial in India where animal rights are linked to religion. Mr Pandey however said the dogs' safety would be paramount. "The safety of the dogs will be ensured before setting them off from a mission.

"They are great assets for the force and it takes around one year to train them. Apart from healthy diet the dogs have to wear specialised jackets for safety," he said.

The only part that I don't agree with:

The animals were later transformed into "suicide" dogs when their handlers decided it was more efficient to detonate the explosives while still attached.

Ridiculous. Everybody knows that God designed the Dachshund for this role.
