'Habbit' like 'rabbit'?

Correct me is I am wrong, the spelling is 'habit'.

Seeing is easier than listening, that is if you don't know the language or the accent.

I don't understand what you are saying
is there any confict between "Chinese is a single language" and "I can't follow all worlds/sentences in a dialog in TV program"?
when we are talking with parents, friends, we also can't follow all worlds/sentences and have to ask them to repeat

it is a single language but with different pronunciation. kind like aussie, UK, and US has different accent, except in china the accent is much stronger. ask them to write chinese, all of them will write simplified chinese in mainland .

as for subtitle, there are multiple reason for it. US tv also has sub/captions for hearing impairing, or someone want to turn down the volume at night etc etc.

How is this even an issue lol? I don't recall any of the Chinese posters here getting worked up about the fact that many Chinese speak Mandarin in a different and even mutually unintelligible fashion.

To address a question raised in the thread: the process of unifying China's written language started in the Shang Dynasty and was basically complete after the Qin Dynasty took power - so, approx. 3000 years ago.

All your TV program are run with Pictograph subtitles because there is nothing called a single Chinese language. Mandarin is a proper language based on Putonghua.
All programs? I'm not sure u watch Chinese often. Aren't u an Indian? If that's true, it's very thoughtful of TV channels to do so for a wider range of viewers. It's like in Bollywood movies some English pops up from time to time in a weird accent as if those Indians were unable to consistently express themselves in their mother tongues. In that case subtitles are indeed helpful even for indigenous Indians of whom only around 10% reportedly understand English, needless to mention such a variety of Assamese, Bengali, Telugu blah blah.

Language or dialect, it takes linguistic expertise to tell them apart, beyond laymen's comprehension. So let linguists to research and debate them out.

And in history it's natural and common for empires to spread their languages to backward uncivilized areas conquered along with which their superior cultures also prevailed. Therefore today English, Spanish, and French, languages of colonial powers still dominate the world. Indians shall be grateful of the great uplifting by English which now link u together and enable u to keep pace with the globalization.

But you exhibit expert personalcomments on the same!

Had there been some quotes from reports, newspapers or links, one would have understood, but personal expert comment without a modicum of familiarity is indeed surprising. At best could be jingoism substituting knowledge.
