China warns foreign embassies not to monitor pollution

Foreign embassies in China should refrain from publishing their own independent air pollution readings, a senior Chinese official has warned.

The deputy environment minister's comments appeared aimed at the US embassy, which puts out its own figures on high pollution levels in Beijing.

The US embassy has a monitoring station on its roof and publishes the results hourly on the internet.

Air quality in Beijing and other cities is notoriously poor.

Without mentioning the US, Wu Xiaoqing, deputy minister of Environmental Protection told a press briefing in Beijing that only the Chinese government is authorised to publish air pollution data.

In reply to a question, Mr Wu said that "some foreign embassies and consulates in China are monitoring air quality and publishing the results themselves".

He said that this contravened the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

"It is also against relevant environmental protection regulations," he said.

But many residents have questioned the accuracy of official government figures, which until this year did not include the most damaging particles.

The US says its own equipment should not be wholly relied on, as its data is compiled from only a single monitor. Its website makes clear that the measurements are for the benefit of embassy personnel and do not give citywide data.

The US monitoring helped spur a public outcry earlier this year that forced China to update its own standards, according to the BBC's Damian Grammaticas.

China has privately demanded that the US halt its readings in the past, but this is believed to be the first time it has delivered a public warning over the issue, he adds.

Using a device on its rooftop, the US embassy in Beijing releases the information hourly via Twitter. US consulates in Shanghai and Guangzhou do the same.

If China feels that foreign embassies are publishing bogus results, they should publish their own and challenge anyone to prove that the Chinese figures are wrong.

And anyway, why should China care as to what others feel about pollution in China?

Unless they are afraid that their own citizens may create some law and order problem reading the foreign figures of pollution.

Sir the critical point here is that they are fudging even the pollution figures. We have been saying for years that they keep fudging a lot of data and this only further proves that they actually do when even something like pollution figures are manipulated.

They also fudge history.

They claim that the Chinese ships visited areas in the South China sea, when in actuality they were on board Malay vessels!

GDP is not fake but percentages sure may be disputed. J20 as a project is true but may well be copied from stolen technologies. And yeah Indian soldiers are better than PLA, be it training and be it them not suppressing their own people.

why dont they just accept it and do something about it.
here in the philipines a lot of controversies has surfaced when the administration changed even in the current administration, but the gov dont hide it.
if the media makes story about something that may be against the government, the government dont censor the media

what tactics and strategy had PLA used except "Human Wave Attack" ... be it the Korean War or Vietnam War ... :pound:

Military strategy is a set of ideas implemented by military organizations to pursue desired strategic goals

Not possible to fix PMI numbers for a locality. If the environment ministry has to lower pollution, then they have to fix all the polluting industries, smoking vehicles as well as the environmentally unfriendly practices around the city, down the countryside. But when bureaucrats are being judged by the number of industries that are started in their region, its difficult for your environment ministry to take actions, going for short term advantages over long term benefits!

Any post here in this forum will become a bashing China ceremony by some Indian members like Ray and Yusuf. I think their hatred toward China already impair their judgment of fair posting. It's sad they no longer post something meaningful in any China related thread.

Blind hatred? I am just commenting on China asking others not to monitor pollution levels. How funny is that? China even hides pollution level tells a lot about the government.

Embassies in a nation is not meant to perform such activities, no matter whatever the issue is, I beg to differ with US intentions, more over in such issues like pollution control debates, India and China are at the same side of the world stage.
