Karachi: An unmanned surveillance aircraft of the Pakistan Navy crashed into an oil refinery and burst into flames following a bird hit in Karachi. No casualties or damage to property on the ground were reported.

The drone crashed into the National Refinery in the Korangi area of Karachi. The aircraft was seen flying at a low altitude before it crashed, witnesses said.

Local news channels quoted naval officials as saying that the drone was on a routine surveillance flight when it crashed after hitting a bird. The aircraft burst into flames after hitting the ground but the fire was extinguished.

A naval spokesperson confirmed the crash of the unmanned aerial vehicle and said such aircraft were used for photography and surveillance.

Police and security forces cordoned off the area and prevented people and the media from approaching the refinery.

The Pakistan navy has increased aerial monitoring of Karachi after terrorists attacked the navy's main airbase in Pakistan's largest city in May. Ten security personnel were killed and two maritime surveillance aircraft were destroyed in that attack.

KARACHI - A Pakistan Navy's pilotless surveillance plane crashed near National Oil Refinery located in Korangi industrial area here on Tuesday.
Police sources said an experimental flight of Navy's remote-controlled plane crashed at the compound of National Oil Refinery situated in Korangi's industrial area. The rescuers of various organisations, police and Ran-gers reached the spot soon after the crash. Fire brigade officials said two fire tenders reached the spot to extinguish the fire.
SHO Asif Jakhrani said a remote-controlled plane of Pak Navy was taking a test flight when it hit the land owing to some technical faults.
However, sources said the plane weighing around 15 Kg, was having two batteries and two surveillance cameras. Sources said plane, brought to Pakistan couple of days back, was hit by a bird after it took off during a test flight.
Agencies add: "A Pakistan Navy UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) crashed after a bird hit it. It fell near an oil refinery and there was no (other) damage," navy spokesman Commodore Irfan ul Haq told AFP in Islamabad.

KARACHI: A Pakistani navy drone crashed near an oil refinery after hitting a bird in the country's largest city of Karachi on Tuesday, the navy said.

"A Pakistan Navy UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) crashed after a bird hit it.

It fell near an oil refinery and there was no (other) damage," Commodore Irfan Ul Haq, spokesman Pakistan Navy told AFP in Islamabad.

Fellow navy spokesman Commander Salman Ali told AFP that there were no casualties and that the drone had been on a surveillance flight when a bird accidentally flew into the aircraft and it came down in the Karachi suburbs.

Pakistan is developing its own drone technology for surveillance and reconnaissance missions because the United States, which is running a bombing campaign with drones in the country's northwest, refuses to give Pakistan the technology.

Two companies in Islamabad, Satuma and East West Infiniti, make drones for the Pakistani military. It is not known if the crashed drone belonged to either company.

It was the third aircraft crash in Karachi in eight months.

On November 28, seven Ukrainians and a Georgian were killed when their Ilyushin IL-76 cargo plane crashed seconds after taking off from Karachi for Khartoum. Four labourers on the ground were also killed.

It crashed into buildings under construction in the Dalmai neighbourhood, where the Pakistan Air Force and Navy have residential apartments and offices close to Jinnah International airport.

On November 5, a US-manufactured Beech 1900C also crashed after take off, killing all 21 people on board.

The aircraft was operated by local company JS Air and had been carrying staff from an Italian oil company to an oil field in Sindh.

Pak Navy inducts indigenously built UAVs

ISLAMABAD (PTI): The Pakistan Navy has inducted its first squadron of indigenously made unmanned aerial vehicles that will be used for maritime interdiction operations in coastal areas.

The UAVs were inducted into the naval fleet during a ceremony held at the PNS Mehran airbase in Karachi Wednesday.

The Uqab-II drones are equipped with sensors and their induction will enhance operational capabilities in surveillance activities, a spokesman said.

Navy chief Admiral Noman Bashir, who was the chief guest during the induction ceremony, said: "Cognisant of heightened surveillance measures at all times, the induction of Uqab-II UAVs will provide essential experience to Pakistan Navy and necessary impetus to utilise this particular segment of warfare to the best use of naval objectives."

Because of their small size, ease of operation and low risk of loss, UAVs are regarded as force multipliers and are increasingly being used by combat forces worldwide, he said.

The drones were inducted a day after a UAV of the Pakistan Navy crashed into the National Refinery in Karachi after hitting a bird.

There was no casualty or damage to property on the ground.

The Uqab-II UAVs are equipped with GPS-based navigation system and have a maximum speed of 150 miles an hour.

They have a range of 150 km and an endurance of four hours. The UAVs have a ceiling of 10,000 feet from ground level.

Naval officials told the media that the induction of the UAVs is part of the navy's efforts to beef up its defence in creeks, along the border and other coastal areas.

The Pakistan Navy has sought budgetary allocations for providing more tactical equipment like UAVs, night vision devices and high speed boats, they said.

The navy had sought UAVs for tracking fishermen on the Makran Coast and for night patrolling in the creek area.

The government is considering a proposal to equip the police with UAVs to monitor urban violence in different parts of Pakistan.
