Antenna orientation does matter, the antenna has to point towards the orbiter or towards earth station or else we cannot communicate.

The landing sequence is a program which is loaded 4 hrs before the decent.

All is not lost, as per inputs only communication issue.

Communication is lost above 2 km do not mean crash I guess.

Lander performance is normal till 2 km altitude, later communication is lost. - isro
